Hope this is the correct forum and if it is I appologise for asking such an amatuerish question here but....

Father having long hung up his saxophone from when he played professionally(ie his sole job) has dipped his toes back into the business in the last year or so with an old mate. They use backing tracks in MP3 format with both on vocals and the old man on sax and some keyboard.

Anyway, up till now I had all the tracks on SDCard which they played via one of those portable dvd players from Lidl hooked up to the PA. This worked a treat. ie it was much simpler than a laptop, the player could read the sdcard, the UI was simple, could be put in single play mode and the next track could be cued up will the first was still playing. In other words the track would stop at the end and not begin playing another meaning no need for the old man to hit the stop button and he could also move the cursor to highlight the next track while the first was still playing ready for him to just hit enter to start the next song. 'Whatever works for him' as they say.

Anyway, he dropped the yoke and the screen is fubarred. LIDL don't have them anymore but we thought we found a suitable LG model in Powercity. Tested it out in store and it seemed to have the connections we needed, usb and the ability to que up the next track like the Lidl player. However after getting it home he is dismayed to find that there is no 'Single' play mode. ie the player starts playing the next track or next cued track when the last track finishes. So he only has enough time as was included at the end of the track by the author. On most of the tracks its about 3 seconds of silence. He doesn't recon thats enough time for him to always reach the stop button in time.

Is there any program that could add say 5 seconds of silence to the end of an mp3 track that can batch process this on about 250 tracks.

Thanks in advance for any advice

Not that I am aware of anyway. To add silence you need to do that within your DAW before bouncing.

the oft suggested Audacity should do it - and free too

copy and paste the silence at the end of the track to make up the required time...

beta 1.3 has some batch function, never tried it though. otherwise you might be able to write a wee macro to automate the process

    see here

could you not just create a 10sec (or whatever) blank track and insert it between each backing track, maybe twice, if he needs time for a sip of water?

Spot on! create a selection and name them with the time eg. 5 sec, 10 sec etc.

    There's lateral thinking for you

You could also find CD burning software that will allow you to specify the length of the pause between tracks.

    That def exists.

If you add tracks of silence in between each song you will have a total of 500 tracks which in my view is a complete mess.

That's why I made my suggestion.
