    Hi,

Im currently a university student due to graduate in May and will be embarking on an ACA qualification with one of the Big 4. However, I have a strong interest in management accounting and believe that it is a growth area for the future (just a hunch) and would be a good thing to have a qualification in. How would I go about getting a CIMA qualification? Would I need to be ACA accrediated first or could I do both at the same time and are Big 4 companies susceptible to you doing something like this?

Lastly, anybody that is CIMA accrediated..what type of advantages has it brought you (domestically and internationally)?

If you are doing ACA at a Big 4 you are wasting your time doing CIMA. It offers zero advantage to someone in your position. Besides ACA covers management accouting (not as much as CIMA, but what you do in your job is what will really teach you). Finish your training contract and then look to move into industry if you want to be a management accountant.

Or alternatively find a job in industry now that offers you training for an accouting qualification (be in ACA, ACCA or CIMA).

Doing CIMA while doing ACA is a waste of time, money and effort for no gain.

For me being CIMA qualified has allowed me to work pretty much everywhere in business and private practice so I saw both sides of the coin and private practice and auditing was the last place in the world I wanted to be so I wont be going back down that route again.

I worked Internationally also and thanks to the CIMA accredidation I had little trouble getting work in the UK and Australia.

To sum it up I think the CIMA route is very good because it is such a broad ranging qualification that doesnt have the narrow focus that some of the other qualifications have.

A chartered accountant whether they are CIMA, ACA or whatever is still a chartered accountant and is very well regarded everywhere.

The Management emphasis of the qualification is a big selling point and employers will love that aspect.

    Good luck.
