Ok, i'm thinking about getting a new set of irons.

Don't have an official handicap yet, will have hopefully within the next month when i get my 3 cards played. At the moment i would average a score of around +13 for 18 holes.
I'm currently using a set of King Cobra irons as in pic http://valueguide.pga.com/images/Cobra/Irons/kig_cobra_oversize_large.jpg

I'm looking to get something from 4-PW. Regular flex i'd think

Budget is around €200-€250. What would ye reccommend?

Im using the new Taylormade R9s, but they are above your budget provided. some damn nice irons though.

what i'd look at in that range are:

    Mizuno mx-100
    Wilson staff pi 7

Although, I think you are severely limiting your choice when you limit it to €250, So i'd suggest looking at good quality second hand clubs.

Id also have you consider trying out hybrids, they cover generally a 3,4,5i length, and there are some mixed sets (hybrids and irons) out there. If you have nice wedges, and nice hybrids, then perhaps you only need a 6,7,8 & 9i... anyway, thats simply an alternative way of looking at developing your golf bag

I think you will not get that much in that price range. If you up your budget to 350 you will have a lot more choice. I do not have any recommendations as I am looking for a new set myself and have not tried any yet.

The ones I am looking at in the 350 - 450 range are:

    http://www.mcguirksgolf.com/irons/wilson-ci9-irons-p-2426.html Wilson Ci9
    http://www.mcguirksgolf.com/irons/taylormade-burner-plus-irons-p-2214.html TM Burner Plus
    http://www.mcguirksgolf.com/irons/nike-vr-full-cavity-irons-p-2280.html Nike VR cavity
    http://www.mcguirksgolf.com/irons/srixon-wr-irons-p-2335.html Srixon WR
    http://www.mcguirksgolf.com/irons/nike-slingshot-2-combo-set-p-2459.html Nike Slingshot
    http://www.mcguirksgolf.com/irons/cleveland-cg7-irons-p-2409.html Cleveland CG7
    http://www.mcguirksgolf.com/special-offers/mizuno-mx100-irons-p-2231.html Mizuno MX-100
    http://www.mcguirksgolf.com/special-offers/callaway-golf-irons-big-bertha-p-2128.html Callaway Big Bertha.

Not knowing how any of them play, I like the look of the MX-100s and they seem to have good reviews. I'm a total hacker by the way, cannot break 100. But I love the game and will be playing it for the forseeable.

Callaway Diablo irons are great but out of your range, i don't have them by the way!

Good pro told me that latest the Srixon's are as good as anything and are about €250

I bought the MX100's and couldn't be happier with them. Got the fitted up in McGuirks in Kinsealy driving range.

I'd also recommend going the used route.
You would get a great set of lightly used irons for €200-250.
    Have a look here - http://www.golfbidder.co.uk/.

Also saw these on adverts, looks like a decent price http://adverts.ie/194291

I bought a lovely set of Wilson Staff Pi7's recently, a little over 200 quid.

Serious value and quality for that money in my opinion.

I'd second that. They are an awesome set of irons.

I am using a set of Taylor Made Burner 09s, and would really recommend them. However, they are more expensive.

I can't remember if i paid €299 or €199 plus €30 fitting. There was an offer on them at the time. I'll check my previous posts about fitting. I'm sure i mentioned it there somewhere ?

Oh and i'm in love my the 7 iron. hit a magic shot off the tee on the 17th at druids, went from left to right and stopped dead on the green within two feet of the pin !

I'm also in the market for new clubs. Have been playing with a borrowed set of Calloway FT irons, which are a lovely set but way out of my price range (think they are €849 on McGuirks Site )

Anyone any recommendations of a cheaper equivalent (reckon €500 is my far upper limit)

    Hi there,

I have a set of big bertha irons on sale on adverts, they are in great condition and you're more than welcome to hit them at the spawell or stepaside driving range any evening. They are a bargain at €200.

    Cheers

I just put an offer in there Ian, I'm in Clare so won't be able to try them out (won't be in Dublin any time soon), but if you're willing to pay for shipping I'll take them off you :)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 160 ✭✭Iangolf

Clareman, I'll have to look into the cost of shipping them, but as soon as I know, I'll get back to you.
