Abolish JB, and put everyone on JA?

Why does JB (Jobseekers Benefit) exist? Why can't everyone be on JA (Jobseekers Allowance)

As far as I can tell JA is better... why?

JA is not taxable income by Revenue

JA is 196, whereas JB can be lower, eg 160 if your contributions in the past were insufficient

JA opens up many FAS schemes, that JB doesn't

The only advantage I can see of JB is that

JB isin't means tested so if you have 100 grand in the bank you can still get JB

can anyone else say why JB shouldn't be abolished?

    That's an advantage?

I'm looking at things from the Indivduals perspective!

But really, is there any other advantage to JB?

Personally think jsb should be higher to help people that have been laid off cope better.i think jsa should be a lot stricter so staying on it long term by choice is not an option.

Not exactly a state benefits issue, as it is more a policy discussion. Moving thread to Politics - sorry mods if its not appropriate here.

and why does JB have an end date... sure, so what, you just switch to JA which has no end date.

and in fact if you contribution histroy wasn't the best you can get more on JA!

JA is means tested. If you've just lost your job and have some savings, JB will be unaffected. You will have to use your savings (over 20k I think) before becoming eligible for JA.

In many countries, their equivalent of JB is much higher than JA and lasts longer which makes sense to me as it reduces the impact of short term unemployment. Our social welfare policy seems orientated towards making long term layabouts as comfortable as possible.
