A moment of silence for the dearly departed...

My Takamine did a nose dive on the weekend and shattered into a million pieces shortly followed by my heart and big toe. Sad day... I appreciate all the suggestions from the last thread I had looking for an electric but now I'm completely guitar-less and my priority is getting an acoustic back!

Went to X-Music today for about 5 hours, played about 30 guitars and all of them were shockingly bad, poorly setup, buzzy with ancient rusty strings covered in gunk. No sign of upkeep there!

Is it usual that guitars in shops be in such poor condition? Seems like I'll have to throw in the price of a setup after purchase to find out if they are any good...

Gonna take a trip into Waltons/Music Maker/Goodwins/Perfect pitch tomorrow and see what they have to offer (aside from the high prices and poor service).

Should I expect most of the guitars I try to be in a state? Should I be asking for discounts or a free setup? How am I to choose if they all feel like ****!

    Ah I'm lost. :mad::(

Sorry to hear that, horrible situation.

I find acoustic's particularly hard to shop for. So much so i've been shopping for about 5 years now. Pretty much every acoustic I've picked up felt crap, regardless of price:quality of build, it just felt wrong and awkward. I do own the more popular named brands, but im most defnitly not one to buy a guitar just for its brand name, they were bought for a reason.

I have a fender DG-3 that i've had for well over 13 years now. Its cheap, in tatters and I know its on its last legs. Its bruised and battered, but it just feels great, it plays itself and i love it to bits. Sounds nice enough, could be alot warmer/bigger tho.

I've been looking at a few jumbo's myself. I feel I need a sharp muscular sounding guitar. The closest I got to it was an epiphone (i feel wrong saying that, but its what felt right). I cant remember the model number, but I've seen them about the place.

Good luck finding one, by far the hardest search there is imo.

I know the feeling, i had a cheap yamaha fg13 (i think is the model). Now ive played a few other models of this exact same guitar but none played, felt, sounded or recorded like my one. Unfortunately though the truss-rod is gone and at the moment its not really in a playable state.

The only nice guitars ive played in a shop have been Taylors, every time they have been setup perfectly and sounded fantastic. No other guitar regardless of price tag has even come close to my cheap as chips Yamaha. The only problem is Taylors are pricey and right now I really dont have the scratch to pay for one :(.

After such a disappointment from X-Music I headed into town today to try a few guitars.

First stop was Goodwins, I'm always forgetting how nice that place is... Spend about 2/3 hours playing around in the Martin section trying all the models. There were 2 that really caught my attention, the D15 and the new OMC-1E.

I spent most of my time playing those. I originally wanted something with a preamp/tuner built in and a cutaway (OMC-1E seemed perfect) but was a lil too bright to my ears and the neck is this new material martin developed, its not wood anyways but doesn't feel too bad...

The D15 was an absolute dream, neck was wonderful, sound was deep and earthy, couldn't have asked for more!

Now all I need is a pickup to suit and I'll be set for life!

Waltons and Music Maker seem to have given up on high end gear which is understandable as there were hordes of kids battling each other for volume

Perfect Pitch, I honestly never feel comfortable in that place! Getting them to give you a shot of a guitar is like draining blood from a stone and when ya do get a go they give ya the evil eye when the volume goes up a bit!

Ah well, seems I've found my baby, roll on payday! Was less painful then expected!

    Ouch!

I feel for you man, my les paul junior took a dive last year. Thankfully it survived relatively unscathed. That surprised me a lot considering Les Paul necks almost snap if you look at them wrong. :pac:

Acoustics are quite difficult to shop for... I was out in Xmusic a while back looking for one and couldn't decide on one so I didn't buy. The Martin you checked out in Goodwins sounds like the ticket. I must pop in there again, its only up the road from me. :)
