hey im doing my leaving cert at the moment. I want to join the army as a cadet, but as the army is not recruiting, i need to start thinking about a different career, atleast until army recruitment starts. I have looked at nearly every course but none of them interest me. It has to be partly outdoor work. I like a challenge both physically and mentally. I hope to get around 350-400 points in the leaving cert. Any ideas would be great

There's a VEC course in St.Kevins College (Clogher Rd, Crumlin), that has some kind of sports course which involves outdoor watersports and stuff, should have a look into that.

Hmmm, if you are inclined towards maths then electrical/electronic engineering is not a bad route to go down. I know a few people who have finished up their degrees in engineering and then went to join the army cadets. Its a good path in to the cadets since engineers that want to join the army are not exactly abundant.

In 4 yrs time you could have a trade, a partial pension, savings and damn good experience.

I agree, I took the Queens shilling aged all of 17. I retired after 25yrs and don’t regret a single moment. :D:D:D:D

I travelled to places and seen sights that most only dream about or seen on factual TV programs. ;)

As you were interested in joining the Defence Force’s as a cadet, then maybe you should look at Sandhurst (the chap factory) as an option.

I will offer this advice; remember the UK armed forces are currently at war. Afghanistan is a hostile environment.

Best of luck with whatever you decide to do

If it is the cadets you want ,then I suggest that you go to collage, get a degree as it will stand to you when it they do start to recuit again. You can do any kind of degree, but best pick one you could live with and enjoy.

If you're interested in a Cadetship within the Defence Forces, my advice to you is go to college and get yourself a degree before attempting to get yourself a Cadetship.

As it is, the Defence Forces has much more interest in degree holders when they apply for Cadetships.

On top of that, although recruitment for General Enlistment is at a standstill, Cadetships are still being offered annually.
