Myself and my boyfriend are thinking of going to Egypt on holiday this year. It'll be in August when we will be going. Thinking of going to see the ruins, and maybe travel down the Nile. We're not sun/beach people so we're not looking for info on that side of things, but if anyone can give me any tips on any tours, places to visit, accommodation and the costs involved. Any website recommendations I can check out too!

Don't go to Egypt in August. It will be unbearably hot and you won't be able to enjoy much.

To the OP, this is true. You will melt, seriously.

I was in Egypt in June, and at one stage the mercury hit 120F can't remember the Celcius but around 45. Seriously seriously hot.

Having said that, you do get acclimatised after a few days. Now you don't need me to tell you to drink as much water as your throat will tolerate. Wear a long sleeved cotton shirt over the skimpy top. Wear a sunhat, and factor xxxxxx sunscreen. Bring baby wipes for cleaning your hands, or that gel stuff. The hygiene in the loos, ain't the best, but if you gotta go, you gotta go! . The paper money is filthy too, so having something to clean your hands is great.

Depends on where you are going to see stuff. Obviously Cairo and the Pyramids and the Sphynx. They are as good as you see on National Geographic. Strange thing is, they are practically in the city. Cairo is mad, so many people, and the traffic is unreal, as are the drivers.... be real careful crossing the street.

Then there is Luxor. Remember the Agatha Christie movie Death on the Nile? Well that is it. I loved it, could have spent days there.

And on to Aswan (the Dam) near the Sudan Border. Cooler there funny enough even though nearer the equator. And millions of temples in between.

Then to the Red Sea for a cool off.

I couldn't recommend this trip more. But beware, you can get sick and it is not all from bad hygiene, mostly from dehydration in the heat. Do what I advised above, wash your hands at every opportunity, and stick to breads and unpeeled fruit, and you will be fine. Oh and hate to be a spoiler, but in the heat, the less alcohol the better. A beer or two ok, but any more in 45 degrees dehydrates you more, and then you get the trots.

I don't think Egypt is somewhere you can do on an independent basis. It can be dangerous in parts, and the Government have escorts for the tourists around all the major sites. There were incidents in the past where terrorists killed tourists, but once you are with a group you will be protected. Any tour operator website in Uk or the Travel Department here have escorted tours.

Enjoy yourself. It is an amazing experience.
