OK, so I'm moving to Narraghmore in Co. Kildare in the next few weeks. It looks like my only option for broadband is the National Broadband Scheme.

I was just wondering if anyone has any experiences / opinions of the NBS? Roughly what speeds, pings etc can I expect? The lady in the 3 store yesterday was very positive, and told me a few people in my area had NBS BB and "they have not complained".

I was also hoping to go with the Mi-Fi option. I'd also appreciate advice and opinions about that.

    Thanks in advance :-)

MiFi is a good option if you need to connect multiple devices, like 2 laptops and a phone.
Some of the NBS areas are under utilised so you could get a pretty fast connection straight out of the box.

If you are going to buy it, go to your nearest 3 store or 3 agent as they'll have the local knowledge and be able to give you fair idea of what to expect and also help if you've any problems that need to be escalated.

    Thanks for that.

The lady in the 3 store was talking about the possibility of "congestion" at the busier times ... is that what you mean? She said it would no longer be an issue by Sept 2010 (not sure why???).

So overall you'd recommend the NBS then?

There is either a new site or a capacity upgrade to the existing site planned for September.

September 09 is a date i've heard before, the rumour is that 14mb midband will be launched natiowide and 3's network should be running at full steam with 99% 3G coverage and they'll also be launching the iphone around then:rolleyes:
I'll believe it all when I see it!!
Their network is getting better ever day but it seems like a lot to do before September.

Or the salesperson is pulling dates out of their backside like the 3 helpline has been doing for many years now.:D

NBS is providing the best Broadband service in whole Ireland. I am always satisfied with the Broadband support and service provided by them. The speed of the Broadband is fast and I have not faced any problem yet.

Congestion is one of the many problems a 3G network will suffer from. They can never say it will be gone though, because it never will. Even if they upgrade the speeds, the congestion will remain, unless you're the only one in that particular cell, and only then if you're close enough to the mast.

One swallow doesn't make a Summer. One user's experience is not indicative of the whole system. NBS is far from the best broadband service in Ireland (it's not even broadband). It may or may not work, the only way to know would be to try it.

    Thanks for the replies everyone.

I'll be ordering this within the next few weeks.

I'll let you know how I get on (keep all fingers and toes crossed for me please ... I need BB for work ... will make my life very difficult if this does not work ...)

If possible don't buy it just yet and commit yourself to a contract before you are satisfied that you will get a service that suits you.

See if you can get it on trial. Don't know if 3 do a trial (someone here surely knows) it would be worth checking out nonetheless.

Three are making all sorts of claims that they simply cannot stand over. It's all lies basically.

That is bad. You should ask them (or better yet, ask Eamon Ryan) what happened to the guaranteed 1.2Mbps minimum that the NBS ensures?

I'm beside an NBS enabled parish, we seem to be getting 'leakage' from them as the speeds have improved enormously (neighbour has 3, I'm just finished an 02 contract).
I get totally random speeds but the average is around 0.6 mbps, 3 on test in my house is 3meg-ish.
Getting 3 mobile b/band tomorrow :), even with more pick-up, has to be better than 02.
