I`ve been invited to go to Scotland(south of Glasgow) for a bit of roe shooting in May...
Does anyone have any experience with travel there concerning flights and firearms?
I have my euro pass sorted and my buddie over there is getting things sorted at his end ie. permits...
Was just wondering which airline to go with....

    Any thoughts?

    Cheers

Not sure about flights, but Larne is only a couple of hours from Dublin, you could take the boat into Troon. It may save some hassle. P&O have agreements with BASC and SACS so they're well used to people taking their hunting rifles over...

Is Larne south of the border?

to go into the north you will need psni visitors pass if you ring the firearms section in belfast they should be able to point you in the right direction they are on the ball up there here is the email . firearms@psni.pnn.police.uk also here is the form needed http://www.psni.police.uk/30-38.pdf aerlingus let firearms but you would want to ring first

    Sports Guns
Aer Lingus will carry sports guns and ammunition cartridges subject to the following:

Sport Guns are to be dismantled.
Sports Guns when dismantled are to be loaded with checked baggage.
Sport Guns, ammunition and cartridges must be packed separately from other baggage.
Sport Guns, ammunition and cartridges must be available for inspection by security.
Ammunition is limited to 5kg per passenger and must be packed in containers of wood, metal, or fireboard with the contents protected against any movement.
Subject to an extra charge for flights within Europe.
Fees For Sports Guns And Ammunition
€40/£32 or equivalent for all flights within Europe. (£37 for flights departing London Heathrow). This fee is payable at the airport on the day of departure. For flights to/from North America sports guns and ammunition may be carried under the normal baggage allowance.

the boat is not as handy as it might seem.
i would rather sail than flying ,firearms are getting damaged or lost a lot of late by air.

you will have to get a visitors permit from the north ,you cant apply for this yourself .
it will take up to 6 weeks .

the Scottish licence is also another 6 weeks ,both requiring your euro pass.

i have stalked and shot competitions is scotland and have always drove ,the cops in the ports are helpfull and know what there doing.
you cant bring ammo on the fast crafts

Give Tony T a bell as he will know about what you need to get out of this country.

It took 3-4 months to get the Northern visitors pass as you know.

You can have a lend of my Northern visitors pass as I won't be using it. :p

I've flown Aer Lingus from Glasgow to Dublin with firearms and no problem. Customs will naturally enough want to see your licences, your friend will be sorting you out with a Scottish licence so happy days.

    Thanks for the replies lads...
I just got off the phone to aer lingus and there is no hassles with both rifle and ammo as long as the rifle is broken down(im guessing the bolt must be kept seperate) and the ammo in a padded box and both gun case and ammo box must not be locked for inspection.......

    Just to be clear.

You must have two cases to keep the firearm and ammo separate

[1] The Gun itself - the gun must be 'dismantled' - namely with the bolt taken out but also in the box.

[2] The Ammo - rounds must be separated or in original boxes and inside the case and incapable of moving around or being impacted.

Locks - both cases must be capable of being locked.
When you get to the airport here they will want to take a look in each case - hence the 'unlocked' statement.
Once they take a look at it you will need to be able to lock the cases before they are checked in to oversize luggage.

Note of warning: When you come back to Dublin - more than likely your Firearms cases will simply come out on the carousel so do not dawdle coming from the plane.

As it stands at this moment, from the 29th of April,
Yes, you will not be able to take ammo with you.

Unless there is an exception applied for and granted to the airline,
It is unclear if the member state where the airline is based has to apply and or agree to an exception at this time and if the destination member state has to apply and or agree to an exception also.
