I have a D-Link wireless N router. My desktop PC has a wireless N usb adapter and my Laptop has the same. Previously the Desktop was connected to the router with lan cable. Since i changed the Desktop to wireless n speeds over my network have halfed. I thought by going to wireless N that my speed would increase? What are the realistic speeds i should be getting when transferring a file from one pc to another?

80mbps should be achievable. A 100mb lan cable will still be faster and more stable though.

Just checked the speed using Dumeter and its 40mbps. Was thinking it was a bit slow for Wireless N.

Depends on your distance from the router and how many walls are in between.

I live in a fairly old house, brick walls throughout, lucky to hit 30mbps in the wrong rooms... :(

Its all partitioned walls in my house and signal level is 4 bars on the pc upstairs but i guess i'm lucky to be getting 40mbps.

Yeah, 40 to 50mbps is good going. It all depends on walls and other radio interferences such as your neighbours wirless router, the dect phone, the microwave, the fridge, ...... you could mess around with the channels that your router is broadcasting on especially if your neighbours have wirless routing!
