    Nintendo 3DS Boasts Glasses-Free 3-D, Coming Soon

    http://www.wired.com/gamelife/2010/03/nintendo-3ds/

Nintendo’s next portable game machine will be called “Nintendo 3DS” and feature 3-D graphics, the company said Tuesday morning.

The new handheld game platform will feature a 3-D display that does not require the use of glasses. It will be released in Japan before March 2011. Nintendo 3DS will be compatible with Nintendo DS and DSi software, the company said.

Nintendo will reveal more information about 3DS at the E3 Expo in Los Angeles this June.

The Nintendo 3DS is a next-generation portable game machine, a successor to the current line of products. The first Nintendo DS was released in 2004. On March 28, Nintendo will release the latest (and apparently last) in the line of original DS players, the DSi XL, in the U.S.

3D without glasses? I'd be worried but Nintendo usually know what they're doing technologically (ignores the Virtual Boy sitting beside the TV). They must have found technology which does this "cheaply" and well enough to play games both in 3D and 2D (no way DS and DSi games will be "upscaled" to 3D).

There is a chance we'll see it September 2011 if it hits Japan before March 2011.

Apparently the higher-end 3D TV models that will be introduced are glasses-free so it seems like they're thinking ahead

Actually interesting speculation on Kotaku about how it will do 3D:
    http://kotaku.com/5499712/is-this-how-3d-will-work-on-the-nintendo-3ds

I saw some glass-free 3D sets at a large EC meeting at the tail end of 2008, some were class, some were well dodgy but none were excellent for viewing without your eyes acting up after awhile.

Nintendo will aim to keep it cheap so using cutting (bleeding?) edge tech is not their usual MO.

Very interesting to see how they will implement this. Personally, I don't think 3D will ever take off until they can ditch the glassess, and not give you a head ache.

So, if Nintendo can pull this off, and give us a good price point, then I think this new 3DS will do very well. Assuming that its all true btw.

Hmmmm - I'm seeing a plague of wall-eyed Japanese kids making the news by august 2011...

Edit - hang on, are they not just going to use that trick from the DSi video that uses the camera to detect your head position and create a 3D image relative to the viewer? Saves on people going blind in the first 6 months of ownership which is bound to be bad for software sales...

    Edit 2 @ Tallon : Yeah, *that* video! :)

I remember seeing a patent that Nintendo had filed years ago, for a three dimensional display using two screens, and what looked like some form of projection between them...

I'll see if I can find it again...

    No!!!!!!!!!

The DS was the last bastion for 2D gaming. My PSP does all my 3D handheld gaming (and doesn't get plaayed).

It's already on the DSi as I mentioned here

Always interested to hear about new Ninty Hardware, hopefully it will be a significant step up from the DS in terms of horse power, The idea of a portable Gamecube is pretty cool. Will be very interested to see just how tis is going to work and what sort of control mechanism it will have.

You have to keep your head in the one posistion or it will not work. Also it will only offer depth rather than things coming out at you.
