How does an adult caution affect one's future?

Does an adult caution for being drunk affect one's future? If one is arrested for being drunk and asked to sign this, can it affect one's future?

    Info: http://www.citizensinformation.ie/categories/justice/law_enforcement/adult-cautioning-scheme

It looks like the whole idea is that it's a once-off get out of jail free card (doesn't go to court). You don't actually need to sign anything to be included in the scheme. You just need to admit you were in the wrong and accept responsibility.

They obviously put it on your record. I don't know whether they divulge it to employers, maybe you should phone them up and ask them, and enquire when they will remove it from your file. Guards are good at hoarding information on people!

It's an unusual scheme, they can caution you without evidence and if it did actually go to court there's a good chance it would be struck out. Then again it's better than being convicted in court of a public order offence.

I got really drunk and the guards took me in for my own safety.. it was only last year and I was 27 :O They couldn't get any sense from me and they didn't want to take me to hospital so they phoned my parents. The shame! Honestly don't know if I got a caution but I don't think I did.

AFAIK the only thing that you have to disclose (to potential employers, when applying for a visa etc) is a conviction. A caution is just a slap on the wrist and nothing to lose sleep over.

A caution as you say is a way to avoid going to court but there are some vital components which must be present. First off the necessary proofs must be present for a public order offence. Usually the person is arrested and brought to the station so a court appearance is very much on the cards. It is only when the prisoner is at the station is that person checked on PULSE and if that person is suitable for an Adult Caution, it would be considered.

This is what would usually happen for an arrest under Section 4, 6 and 8 because the person would normally be taken into custody for their own safety (S4), to prevent for breach of the peace (S6) or to prevent any further breach of the peace (S8)

very true. It also shouldnt go against a person applying for a visa either. The only job where an adult caution may come up is if that person is applying to AGS

Adult caution is a warning. If you have never been in trouble before and you get arrested for public order you are eligable. There are other offences, like assault that you can get a caution for. The main thing is that you must accept your behaviour and agree to be cautioned. The caution doesnt happen on the night you are arrested. You have to come to the station at a later date and be formally cautioned by an inspector. If you miss that appointment you lose the option of a caution and get summonsed to court. Despite what the previous poster said it is not often a public order case is thrown out because all they need is for the Garda to give evidence. The judge can also ask if you were given the option of a caution when he's doling out the punishment. If you accept the caution and receive it formally from an inspector it stays on your record forever. This is because you are only entitled to one per lifetime and a record needs to be kept to show you received it. It is not considered a conviction when it comes to background checks and visas though. However if you are convicted in court in the future for something else the adult caution can be revealed to the judge when he asks for your previous convictions.

Is this caution for the defective shoes?
