When you tried to get insurance, were you told the reason you were declined?

I'd say the best option is to go to a good insurance broker and get their advice.

    Agreed with Cunsiderthis.

Insurance companies will easily turn down individual applicants but they bend over backwards to keep their brokers happy.

Pick a big broker, ideally you are familiar with who will plead your case with the underwriters.

    Have you tried
    Insurance Ombudsman (Ireland)
    32 Upper Merrion Street
    Dublin 2
    T: 353 1 6620899 F: 353 1 6620890

The web site appears to be broken so don't know if they still exist but i know they were good for people who were having difficulty obtaining car insurance.

Did you burn a house down or something? How many insurance companies have you tried? First thing to do is to get it in writing from the insurance company with the reason for being declined.

I wonder why you think the insurance ombudsman might be able to help? the ombudsman is there to deal with complaints about insurance companies, not to try to help someone obtain insurance quotations.

Yes but afaik they also act as an intermediary when someone is having trouble or getting ridiculous quotes and i have heard of such cases i.e. someone has his car stolen which is subsequently involved in fatal accident while being driven by the culprit.

Insurance Companies subsequently either refusing to quote or giving ridiculous quotes.

I know someone (and forgive me if its not The Insurance Ombudsman) does intervene.

    The insurance ombudsman can help

    Here is what to do

Get five insurance quote's from diffent company's.
Get it in writeing that they refused you insurance.
Then you can go to the insurance ombudsman and you will then be able to get insurance.

Its might be a bit of messing about but if thats what you got to do that's what you got to do.

The insurance ombudsman has powers to compel an insurance company to entend cover to someone they consider a bad risk, and at a price set by the insurance ombudsman?

It seems unlikely somehow...do you have the statute where this is written down?

It is certainly the case where motor cover is concerned.

Really? He can force an insurance company to insure someone and at the same time force them to accept a premium he dictates?

In any case this is house insurance, and I wonder can a company be compelled to issue house insurance, whether B&C or contents. It sounds unlikely.

They can make a company offer cover. But they can charge what they like. ;)

The first thing I would do Rocket Boy is find out the exact reason they are refusing you. It might not be because of what you think.

I know in Cork lots of insurance companies are not covering houses that are in flood areas after what happened last year.

Worse still, the OP must now declare on any future proposals for insurance that he has been declined.

Failure to declare a refusal of cover or a quote is an act of non-disclosure.
