I have an ipod that I connect to the car stereo via a kit which plugs into the back of the car unit and it allows me to play music and charge the ipod, no control of the ipod through the unit but I can play music which is all I really want. I've been thinking about getting an iphone and I tried a mates iphone and while the cable will connect to the iphone there's an error message on the iphone saying it's not compatible. Anyone got a solution other than buying a new car kit, maybe an adaptor of some kind or app which will allow connection.

Just ran out and tried it again and the error message we get is along the lines of "This device is not supported" and another one about an airplane setting.

    is this the message?

If so, the issue is that Apple changed the wiring of the dock connector when they dropped FireWire support a few years ago, so older accessories won't charge newer iPods. It should still work for audio playback (assuming this is the message you're getting).

If you want to use the interface for charging, you could get a Griffin Charge Converter. It's an adapter that lets newer iPods (and iPhone) charge from older devices. There are others like it, but this is the smallest and neatest I've come across. I use one in the car with my iPod touch to hook it up to my car kit, and it works a treat.

Thats it ok. The car kit is 5 or 6 years old at this stage so it is definately the older type.
So if I press the "No" button I should be able to use the phone through a bluetooth device and listen to music at the same time and the phone would just turn off the music for the duration of a call. Am I correct?

    Exactly, that'll work fine.

The message will actually disappear if you leave it there for about 30 seconds.
