Sky Won't Install

I recently ordered a new HD+ box and installation with Sky as a new customer. They sent a guy out a couple of weeks ago and he took a look at the house and fled.

I called them back and they said they have no Special Heights Team for ROI.

What the hell does that mean? Most houses are 2 story in Dublin. I now have to find an independent person who will probably charge heaps.

    Order Sky through an independant.

Yeah looks like I have to do that, but I don't understand why Sky can't do it. Surely it is a requirement for the job. All they need is insurance.

Sky don't have their own installers here in Ireland they use Sub/Sub contracters the majority of which are Undertrained and Underpaid.thats why sky can provide an install very cheap. Also these Sub/Sub installers are on commision work
Back in the early days of Sky digital a job booked through sky direct was called a SDI { Standard Digital Install} which means that the dish is mounted on any of the 4 walls of your house and the cable ran straight down that wall and a hole drilled through.
Your best bet is to contact a local Aerial/Satellite rigger he works for himself and will carry all the right Equipment and insurance to put your dish on the chimney.

Bit of a wild assumption there, what are you basing that on?

Please dont start the "chimney" debate again! Chimneys are NOT a good idea for any dish.
Where do you neighbours have there dishes sited??
Could you get line of site with a swan neck pole?
    Do you have an outbuilding?

So not based on any facts or actual experience then just an assumption that all humans are greeedy ? Next time you use a sweeping generalisation you might want to check your facts first ie get some quotes.

Neighbour had sky dish on their chimney until winds earlier this year - now don't have sky, have a damaged chimney and probably many damaged roof tiles.

Having seen that, I would not stick a sky dish on my chimney:eek:

The problem with chimney mounts is that drilling bolts into the brickwork can cause them to become loose over time, especially a badly constructed one. Good practice is to use a lashing kit which wraps around the chimney howver I think chimney mounts are a last resort where no other option is available.

Wooaah. Cool it there, Mister. I said 'probably'. There is nothing wrong with being slightly skeptical of independant services. We have all had bad experiences, I am sure. I wasn't saying everyone in the Satellite installation business is out to get me, so there is no need to get your back up on this thread.

    I hadn't thought about this.

I have this sky dish bolted to the chimney for last five years. It's positioned on the "inner side" of the chimney, that is between chimney and the higher part of the roof. I thought that was a great location because the dish is totally hidden, and may be because of it being protected from two sides (chimney and roof), it's probably okay?

I am thinking of upgrading to Sky HD soon-ish. May be I should take advise a local sat-guy.

I have my Sky dish on my chimney. It was installed thru a local independent dealer. He did a good job. The main reason why I wanted it on the chimney was because on the chimney its hidden from view.

A couple of years later I upgraded to Sky+. Sky sent out a local independent installer and he had no problem getting up on the roof.

Then last year I upgraded to HD and the installer (a Sky subcontractor) wouldn't go up on the roof (due to Health & Safety reasons) and left me in the lurch with no date when they would come back. I kept ringing Sky until they sent someone out. Same subcontractor company - different guy. The guy said technically for H&S he couldn't do it. But he used to work with a local independent shop and as long as I didn't tell anyone in Sky he would do it. And he did. Sound guy.

I was told by this Sky installer that Sky would use his company first and if they couldn't go up on the roof (for H&S) then Sky have to find an independent installer that is insured to go up on the roof. And I thought Sky would cover all the costs for this.

So if the customer wants a dish on the chimney (and its safe) then Sky are obilged to find someone to install this. Am I correct in saying this?

Afraid not, sky are not obliged to do anything in this regard its entirely up to the installation team which is why its almost always better to go with a local independent.
