My head is done in very month ringing o2 about how much they are charging me for internet access. I am a pre pay customer and I used to top up €20 a month now I find I am topping up by €50 very month because o2 are charging me a fortune for internet access.
I got charged €11 on Saturday for internet access of 1198kb at 14:30 when I wasn't even using the phone at the time because I was out with friends. When I rang o2 today to ask them why I was charged this amount they told me that I went over my 50mb daily allowance when I told them I hadn't been using the phone at the time they told me that the iphone checks automatically for updates. What the hell was it updating for €11 they couldn't tell me!

I get no where with them anytime I call and I found the coverage over the weekend was hopeless.
Anyone else feel they are being ripped off with them or has anyone got any advice on what I could do?

I used to be ripped off by them, then I switched networks. It's that simple;)

Well I'm on bill pay, so data use at home is never a problem, but when I was roamin in the uk, they roayally screwed me, charged me 16 bloody euro for 4 mb of data, and charges Also ridiculous in regards to texts, basically, my bill is gonna be pretty much around the 300 euro mark.

Vodafone are ten times better then then gangsters.

Is it that simple just to switch networks and keep the iphone. I am seriously thinking off just bashing it off the wall I am dropping so many calls and it can be so slow!!!

Is Vodafone the only other network that supports the iphone?

I am the opposite when I was in the uk last month I couldn't connect to the internet so they didn't charge me the daily 98c. It actually saved me money.

have ya got email set up on it, if ya have push activated it can check every 15 mins, i dont know how much data it would use but its somethin
have ya anythin like facebook on it either, again that can push notifacations through
is location services turned on, i dont know if that constantly updates but its another possibility

I took my email off it already.
O2 told me that the only way you can stop updates is if they disconnect the internet totally.

They only charge you if you use it: remove the APN and you can't connect. Simples.

Turn off Push: turn off fetch (set to manual). Turn off location services and so on. Or remove the APN completely until you need it. Then it won't check anything -because it can't.

change to bill, save yourself a tenner a month, and have unlimited internet

You couldn't connect because 'data roaming' was set to off. In a similar manner, while at home, all you have to do is physically remove the APN -then it won't connect.

Does my phone need to be unlocked to remove the APN?

No Setting-> General-> Network-> cellular data network-> instead of internet or open.internet type anything eg int.
That's it and try to use net it shouldn't work.

Also why don't you go on Clear plan, with €20 you get free o2 and landline + 15 data bundle.
total 35€ and only 30 day contract.

No go to setting - general - cellular network settings click apn, it should say Internet.
Just add a letter or remove a few. Whatever ya do take note of what ya change and what it should be

I was with Speakeasy on the iPhone. Between the 26th of December and March 19th I spent €165 on credit. Its absolute robbery 50MB/day for 98c is terrible.

I unlocked my iPhone and changed to meteor Sim only Lite. Ten or Thirty Euro a month + 10GB data for €15

You are not locked into a contract. You can use the data for tethering. Its easy to set up. I can actually use the iPhone now. Its brilliant.

Absolutely not: settings are user-configurable. Change just 1 letter and it's useless. Alternatively, cut and paste the APN into notes, then copy it back when needed.

Guys, when roaming, make sure you have the data roaming option turned off, that way then it's guaranteed not to do any kinda connection to the net at alll.

Not true. I spend 40 euro on credit per month and am not tied to a 18 month contract like on bill pay.

And I can never see myself going over 50MB in 24 hours on a phone!

If your watching video's on YouTube it's very easy to go over the 50mb daily limit, there very data intense.

Nor do I, but it seems the OP was doing so regularly.

No one on a 50mb daily rate on Voodoo, O2 or Meteor should be watching videos on YouTube and if they are, they deserve all they get. There are add-ons for that. 99c a day is very expensive if used on a daily basis and a nonsense when there are cheaper solutions around.

There are no add ons on speakeasy

This is the very reason I'm with three.

Pay as you go: Spend €20 a month, get 300 free texts, 200 free any network weekend minutes. Then spend €10 of that on their internet addon: 1Gb

So: 1Gb internet allowance every month, plus 300 texts, free weekend minutes and a tenner left for weekday calls. I can't see anything else that beats it. Unless you are a heavy caller.
