RTE On Freesat North Of Border

I haven't got Sky myself and to be honest I don't want it I see it as a complete waste of money I get by very well with Freeview and rented DVD's. End of rant :D

Anyway little Sis has Sky but she is now thinking of ditching it. She has one concern though. If she ditches Sky and goes Freesat will she be able to receive the various Southern stations, especially TnaG. We both live North of the border.

If she leaves Sky does she have to do anything special in order to receive Southern TV stations.

Is it simply a matter of cancelling your subscription with Sky and getting a new card or is it simply a matter of cancelling and well just receiving whatever no coded free channels are out there.

As I indicated above I know very little about Sky but would appreciate some help.

    Many thanks
    Kevin

The only way to get RTE and TG4 on satellite is to pay a subscription to Sky.

RTE & TG4 are only on satellite for the convenience of Sky customers, Sky pay most of the costs of providing the service.

RTE don't want to pay for a free satellite service like BBC and ITV do and there are no plans to introduce one in the near future.

if she is close to the boarder, there is a possibility that she could pick up rte etc by using a roof top aerial,

If u post over in the terrestrial forum, they'll be able to give more info

Except for the fact that RTE should really be charging Sky for the rights to carry RTE and this would likely well outweigh the costs of uplinking, which really aren't that great.

Sky make the price of EPG positioning artificially high, but RTE would avoid that cost if their negotiators were anyway half decent.

Yeah im afraid Sky is the only way to get it digitally, unless you can pick it up via terristal
The switchover is next year I think so rte will be available on the FTA, no date is set yet though I think.

Switchover in NI mid to late 2012. No guarantee yet that RTÉ 1/2 will be there, but though the two governments have signed an agreement to find multiplex capacity to carry them. TG4 will be available under current plans.
