i have evergreens that i want to shape. and also a japonicus ( i think thats what it is ) that needs reducing when is a good time to do this? and whats the best way to do it.

evergreen is about 5 foot and japonicus not very dense but about 4 foot.

will pruning make the hedge denser? ( i know i will be cutting off some......)

I'm afraid the unhelpful answer is, it depends on what kind of japonicus you have - there are lots of things called japonicus, probably the likeliest would be euonymous, but it doesn't usually grow all that high (yellow and green leaves). Same with the conifers, what type? You can trim them but if you hard prune most conifers they will not grow back at all, its easy to destroy a conifer. Pics might help.
