Freenet. Is it any useful at all?

I was thinking about downloading freenet just out of curiosity. Is there any greater risk of viruses etc by using freenet (opennet) instead of my normal browser. Is there any real benfit to using it as I've heard it is fairly slow and plain not usefull unless your avoiding blocks that your country has put up like China.
