Failure to display insurance disc

    Hi there,

I'm insured with Quinn Direct. They provide me with Third Party Extension which basically lets me drive any car with third party cover within certain T&C. One of these T&C is NOT that the other vehicle has to be insured.

As a result of this if I'm driving another car which is not insured then I won't have an insurance disc to display. I will however be fully insured to drive it.

Can I (by the letter of the law) be done for having no insurance disc even if I have valid insurance and can prove this by showing my policy documents etc?

    Thanks

This is move of a legal issue but i'll throw oujt an answer to you here...

The offence is Non display of an insurance disc 10 days after authentication of the Disc (the date it was issued by insurance company not date of cover)

This complicates a prosecution for this offence. In essence of the law then yes you can be prosecuted for not having it, however I cant see a prosecution being sucessful. When was your disc authenticated.....when did you start driving the third party vehicle etc etc. I'd keep your insurance certificate with you if possible......or produce it within 10days on demand if so needed.

Just on this.....make sure the third party vehicle is NOT in your own name.....if it is your not covered.

I'm not too interested in going into the T&C of Third Party Extension because as you probably have seen in other threads it just leads to pointless arguments full of misinformation and what not as it obviously varies from policy to policy.

If you think it's better would you be able to move this legal discussion or similiar? The reason I posted here was to get the frontline Garda view on it I guess. I know you guys don't deal with the nitty gritty as much but interested to hear your opinions first rather than what happens down the line in court.

I'll leave it here for a day or two to give time for other members to post and then i'll move it to legal.
