    Hi all,

Myself and my girlfriend are travelling to Thailand in August. We have read that it is Monsoon season there and it can be dangerous travelling to the islands because of rough seas etc.

I am just wondering has anyone travelled to Thailand during this month and if so if they have any advice?

    Thanks a million

Yes it is rainy season during August in Thailand but in reality you can often go for several days when there is no rain at all. When it does rain it does bucket down big time, but generally clears away as quickly as it came.
I wouldn't let it stop me from going. You'll still have a great time. Island hopping is perfectly safe during the monsoon. If you go diving however visibility may not be all that good (compared to non-rainy season).

    Cheers,

you cannot escape the rain in august but to be honest it is welcome and personally I have often walked out into it for relief from the heat it is sort of refreshing why not head to koh Chang gone a bit touristy now last time I was there was 2006 first time 1978 it has changed but it still has a little charm.

jeez i got the high speed catermeran from phangnan to bangkokish(bus it some of the way), ive never been so scared in mylife, thought the thing was gonna sink, gf crying on my shoulder, smell of vomit everywhere, the thais will do anything for a buck, the service should of been cancelled, it was the end of a monsoon, having said that we got the big ferry over from down south to phangnan in the same weather and while rocky it was ok - other than that all was well, you'll have a ball!!

I would recommend heading to Phi Phi, spent two weeks in Thailand in Nov, 07. Phi Phi is the one place I would defo head back to!!

Its a lovely wee Island! No roads or anything...just paths!

It's changed a lot unfortunately buddy. Sickly commercialised at this stage, and frightfully expensive by Thai standards over the past 10 years. I never thought I'd see Thailand become "pricey", but it actually is now. I was there in 2007 and 2009, and the change was unbelievable, especially in Phi Phi (prob due in part to the fact that they were rebuilding after the tsunami in 2007). We couldn't wait to get off it and go to Phuket (that's telling you something).

OP - myself and my girlfriend got stuck on a sand bar in an evening boat (supposed to be 5pm, left waiting till 10:30pm before departure) from Krabi to Phi Phi. Lot of worried faces/vomit etc, eventually had to be towed off it back to Krabi. The phrase "One night in krabi" is something I've heard the phi phi boat reps say two times too many (both times I've been there), as boat cancellations due to poor weather are all-too-common during monsoon season, and we've been left out on our own on foot trying to find accommodation at 11pm at night in Krabi (shithole with precious little to do) twice! If you're boating it from Krabi do yourself a favour and aim for the early boats.

That said, "monsoon season" isn't really monsoon season around the islands. It's fairly sunny the whole time and we experienced probably 5 days of rain during the 40-50 we spent there over the two trips in July-August.

OP - By and large travel is safe in Jul/Aug, but only as safe as anything in Thailand is in general.
