I was listening to John Boyne (The Boy in the Striped Pajamas) talk yesterday. He said his first book was rubbish and was never published, and that he typically does ten or twelve drafts of every book before he sends it to the publisher. Then he might have to do more drafts.

Ten or twelve drafts is what separates him from the rest of us.

At least a lot of us have this much in common with him ;)

I heard someone say "Your first book is the one you should never publish." Looks like that even applies to the superstars.

I loved his Thief of Time... picked up a review copy at a book sale when I was about 14. Really lovely.
