Hello, I intend to go to wales for a weekend, but I've been looking on irishferries and stenaline, and I was wondering if I can go to Rosslare and get a ticket with cash, because I don't have a credit/debit card to pay over the internet, anyone know if this is possible ?

    Thanks

On a similar vein, I need to go to the UK next weekend but my passport is in for renewal since Friday. Do I need a passport for the ferry? Someone told me I don't but would like to be sure. Tried calling Stena but no reply.

It'll be at least €10 dearer with Irish Ferries (their online fares are discounted by this much) but shouldn't be much more - this isn't a massivley high demand time.

You don't need any photo ID for land travel let alone a passport.

You can in theory be asked to prove residence/right to residence in the UK or Ireland, though. However - I have NEVER been asked for any photo ID and I'm back and forth on the ferries constantly. In this case I suspect an expired passport would do anyway - its photo ID, just not valid for use as a passport.

If you're driving you'll have your driving licence anyway, so you're sorted.

Hello another question, If I'm going to Rosslare and I'm getting a ticket, I'll pay in euros.I'm only getting a single ticket first coz I don't know how much I'm staying there. But from Pembroke back to Rosslare do you have to pay in pounds or can it be in euros as well ?

Hi, I'm supposed to be going to Dublin by ferry this weekend for a stag do and the Irish national, but my mate's now told me I need photo ID or I’m doomed!

All I got is a passport that expired 2 years ago and an old work id. I've checked on the stena line and Irish ferries websites and they advise taking a photo id but don't say it’s mandatory.

If I turn up with my old passport, old work id , paper driving licence and a few utility bills and bank statements will that be enough to convince them I am who I say I am? :confused:Or will I be refused entry?

It's a good few hours walk from Fishguard to my house in South Wales.

    Cheers for any help.

i have done the trip across dozens of times, i dont think I have ever been asked for ID or even stopped at the checkpoint.... your passport may have expiired and not be usable as a passport, but it is still photo ID and should suffice in my opinion.

Even when arriving from France on the ferry I was not asked for a passport.

I was stopped in Holyhead last year by police looking at everyone's identity cards/passports.

Work ID alone is enough, should they ask. Even then, it only requires a convincing argument if you don't have ID - if you've got a UK or Irish accent, you'll be let through. There is zero *legal* requirement for ID on sea travel between the UK and Ireland.

But the ferry operators are free to make up their own rules. P&O require a passport to go to Liverpool.

Ryanair require a passport even to go to the UK.

Irish Ferries never check and I don't remember Stena doing either - what happened to KC61 was a police "immigration" check, which has no legal right to demand ID. Although they can make it difficult for you if you've no proof of residency in either the UK or Ireland.

I am heading to Wales via Rosslare- fishguard this week-end and I am just wondering is it still the same about the passport as I checked my own and its out of date with a month,
    thanks in advance

Irish Ferries don't require passports to get to the UK so I doubt Stena do either at this point. It is recommended that you bring some form of proof of residency even if its only a utility bill or birth cert. An out of date passport will do. The UK boarder agency recently have stepped up their presence at the ports. If you have nothing to show them they will pull you into the office and fire a load of questions at you.

I did Rosslare-Fishguard on Stena a few weeks ago and I was not asked for any ID at all.

I never bring my passport when traveling by land & sea between Britain & Ireland. Why bring a passport when it's not strictly required, just another item to lose on your journey & expensive to replace.

Proof of residence & bank cards should be sufficient or driving licence or any government photo ID like Tax cards. :D

Don't put me on a plane with passport unless I'm going Egypt or Turkey or somewhere very far away :pac::pac::pac:
