I signed up for one of the Motor Check (Topaz) fuel cards a few weeks ago to try and save money on petrol, Think it's working so far as the last garage I filled up in had a pump price of 132.99 while I was getting it for around the 128. mark, this weeks rates are:

    Diesel - 118.86

    Petrol - 128.27

Is anyone using any other kind of fuel card, how do the prices compare to the Topaz one?

(Link to the get your free fuel card if anyones interested)

With that card you need to be aware of both prices, as if the pump price is cheaper they'll automatically charge you the card price.

In addition if you miss a direct debit they can charge you whatever they like as a penalty (check the T&Cs you signed up to).

Be careful with it. I tore mine up!

I've been just taking the card price not the pump price as it's been cheaper over the last 3 weeks, haven't got my first statement yet. The direct debit doesn't worry me, have to pay for it one way or the other, may as well be direct debit. Do you know when they debit your account, do you get a statement first?

Yeah, they send out the statement a few days beforehand.

BTW, dunno what part of the country you're in but I found that card to be uncompetitive for 10 or 11 months of the year. For example it's 126.9 for unleaded near me, or if I travel a bit it's 122.9.

They haven't done this for some months / possibly a year at this stage. You're always charged the card price whether it is higher or not.

I no longer use my personal one except when abroad (their currency rates are better than my credit card after its fees).

    That's what I said.

They work out more expensive in the long run, better off paying the pump prices, we scraped them all here & refuse every phone call we get from companies offering them, there's a website www.pumps.ie handy if your planning on a long trip & know you'll need to fill up at some point, you can check ahead for best prices on the pumps before ya leave

Same here . Get calls from them now and then wondering why I'm not using the cards. I keep fobbing them off My local garage is 2 cents/ltr cheaper than the cards so until they can match that I'll leave the cards in the glove compt.

Read too quickly, my mistake. They used to charge the cheaper of the two and I thought you were saying that.
