just wondering why people think cars with dustbin exhausts are better?

I dont see why ,in my opinion:-they make your car louder
-make it look worse, especially small cars(clio's,corsa's,civic's etc.)

Well people with performance cars often put performance exhausts on their cars. This is because a performance exhaust will allow for improved flow of exhaust gases. Basically allows the engine to breathe easier and if engine upgrades are being done its often wise to upgrade your exhaust system, after all why have a powerful engine coupled with an exhaust system that smothers it?? However a common consequence of a free-er flowing exhaust system is an increase in sound due to the greater flow of exhaust gases. So you can see why they would be used on performance cars, but ya they're pretty useless on cars that dont have much power to begin with!

I don't see the point in putting them on non performance cars myself, but live and let live is my motto.

Most of the people doing this are young and simply can't afford the insurance on something decent.

That's what 17 year old boys are supposed to do. Hell if it helped me score girls I'd put a big exhaust on my Seat Inca :D

I think the older I'm getting the more tolerable I'm becoming looking at these people. Wouldn't float my boat at all. A big loud exhaust on a performance car though, yes please

my Cortina has a perfomance exhaust,,,(twin 2 1/4" with balancing pipe and Janspeed manifolds). It doesnt make the car loud, it keeps it quiet (it purrs like a kitten on idle....roars like a Grampus when you need it to though)

Handsome is as handsome does my old mum used to say (not a clue what that means:D

Have to agree 100% but I wouldn't hold it against some teenager doing it, they're young and thinh Halfords is the business when it comes to modifications

Performance cars can be road cars too ;) . I get what you're getting at though the likes of 1 litre Corsas, Polos, etc with all of about 80bhp in them..performance exhaust most certainly dont belong on the likes of them..

Young fellas like loud exhausts. There is plenty worse they could be up to. They want to try simulate the sound of car they can yet afford, doesn't bother me most of the time.

The exhaust on my ma's punto is fúcked and it sounds like a boy racer car now. I don't know how anyone can drive with such a loud exhaust, it's bloody deafening! I couldn't wait to get back into my normal volume car!!

A young lad obviously wants people to think he is the bees fecking knees so he needs the loudest sound of thunder coming from the back of his car he can find. It's a pure psychological thing....

Perhaps they think the noise will compensate for the typcial small engine under the bonnit these guys drive with. I think the only cars worth putting these performance exhausts on are cars that have decent power..
But then again some powerful cars out there with exhaust systems are driven by clowns that just never grew up and continue to blip the feck out of the throttle all their lives annoying everyone else. It's reasonable to have these exhausts on powerful cars if the driver is not a d!ck head.

Thats is loud but doesnt sound crappy, so imo good.

Ive gone through 3 backboxes from the stock ones to get my noise down. Finally think Ive got there now that I removed the Cats, which were reducing flow and screwing up the crossover (loud droning at low RPM).
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ghYOeUcej9c

I can roll about at 30mph in 6th with the RPMs as low as they can be with only a smooth hum. I always thought the Cats were the issue, no one believed me!
If you turn the Bass up for playback it sounds a bit more true to life (ie dont bother playing it on onboard laptop speakers), as best a camcorders Mic will allow anyhow.
