I went into my local bike shop today and bought a bike for my other half. Anyway he tells me I should give the race tomorrow a go. Its on in Derroura, which I've been on 6 times in total.

So looking at the site there is an A league and B league (I'd definately be a B league, since I'm new); anyone ever try this race? Looking for level of the B people and what I should prepare for tomorrow...

Last race I ever did was on a road bike back in 1999!!

The B race is for total beginners or long time lapsed riders - its designed to get people out out on the bike but not feel the pressure of full on races (the course won't be exceptionally technical either). But saying that there should be no bangers in the field, so the racing should be pretty close. Race report from round 1 here with some pics - http://www.madmtb.com/forums/showthread.php?t=3837

The course in Galway is 16km. I'd be able to do it in 2 hours... slow enough I guess.
I'm wondering if anyone here knows the distance for the B's tomorrow?

the previous rounds have been roughly a 4k loop. Two laps i think it is normally for the B's

I'm pretty sure it's not the full loop, instead it'll be several loops of the lower sections, which sections exactly I don't know.

we were up there and had money in our back pockets. Then they told me it was 20 euro on top of the 10 euro for a day licence, so we didn't bother doing the race and went off to do the normal course instead. Its a pity it didn't mention this anywhere.

That'd be Cycling Ireland for you. €20 for a day licience is crazy money for beginners to pay.

Glad to hear you didn't pay the extra, the poster has 10 euro on it and I was out there yesterday and the sign said 10 as well. I hope others followed suit and next time they run it they charge the correct price!

You need a racing license to race, there are no two ways about that. I thought it was €10 for a day license though.

Its €10 if you have a non-racing CI license and €20 if you dont.

Right, that would be what I had last year all right. Don't think they ever asked to see the license though.

If you (bother) register on line for an MTB event there is a link to a PDF explaining the licences. It is a pity you weren't aware of this, afaik none of that 20 euro would have gone to the organisers who do the hard work putting on events like this.

Its a shame that they put a lot of work into these events and not make it more clearer for people. On the poster it states 10 euro for "everyone else" and considering this is aimed at beginners I wouln't think many would have a licence and the final charge was 30 euro.

I agree that people need to get a licence for these events but hopefully next time they run this the organisers will have corect proces on the posters.

I don't think they could fit all the different licence possibilities on the 1 poster. It could have been more obvious that licences are required, they do mention that they will be available at the race, it isn't much of a leap to assume you either need one or need to find out what one is.

For next time (plenty of NPSs, Marathons, Challenges and other events in the year):
