    Hi Lads,
Is anybody familiar with the rear brake/hub assembly on an 02 Landcruiser.
She has drum brakes on the rear and the handbrake is'nt holding so I'm going to strip the brakes down since the cable has been tightened.
I suspect its probably worn shoes or a sticky adjuster.
Just wondering is the drum and hub one unit or are they seperate?
    Any help woud be apprecited,Cheers.

rear handbrake shoes on a landcruiser are an awful job. the flange on the hub is completely in the way. id say the problem is that the shoes require adjustment.
If you remove the wheel you will see a rubber bung in the front of the disc. remove the bung, turn the disc until the hole is at 6 o clock and when you shine a torch thru the hole you will see the adjuster. turn it with a flathead screwdriver until you hear the shoes bairly rubbing the inside the drum.
Try that and see how you get on. It might be no harm to remove the disc completely, inspect and clean the shoes, and make sure there isnt anything seized. you can also figure out what way to turn the adjuster when you have the disc off

More than likely it is the RHS side that is seized.

The arm going into the assy gives trouble as the LHS one is always the first to work when you pull the handbrake.

As far as I know you should be able to free it out without removing the disk

Cheers Lads,I'll give that a go and see how I get on.
Theres also a wheel stud sheared off in the hub so I'll have to strip the hub/drum off anyway to get the broken stud out and the new one in.
    I'll let ya's know how I get on,thanks again.

This is the best pictorial explanation that I have seen yet.

Job done Lads!:) thanks for the info.
The adjuster was at fault in the end,it was wound all the way in even though the shoes were worn half way down. I replaced the broken stud and then set the brakes up properly with the adjuster. Put a new set of brake pads in too while I had it striped.
    Handbrake is holding perfectly now.:D
