Where to get fabric for clothes?
Hickey's and Woolen Mills or whatever in Dubin are both a bit limited.
And Hickey's are generally a bit prickish at the best of times.

Anyway, looking for something groovy, maybe cotton woolen mix, autuminal colours, maybe unusual patterns or designs.

Any online shops people could recommend?

ebay. the prices on a lot of stuff there is great, even with postage. i got a lot of stuff a while back and it worked out quite cheap. example. 1 zip in dublin was a few euro. 1 got 10 32 inch zips for a fiver on ebay including shipping. so about 50 cent each. just hunt around. you will find deals if you look.

e-bay is a good bet, lots of sellers sell my the yard/metre as well as fat quarters and odd cuts.

there's also cheap fabrics - never bought from them myself but found them while searching and they seem dead cheap but then i suppose you'd have to factor in the postage.

hi sorry they are in Dublin]http://murphysheehy.com/[/URL] not the best web site but the shop is good, it is quite small and you have to look through lots of rolls but it is great for something different. Hope that this will help

This might be pushing the cheap aspect a bit but you can get cotton double sheets and duvet covers in penney's or charity shops for really cheap and you can get enough fabric out of them for a top or a skirt.
But if you're looking for specific fabric, ebay has some great value. It's also set up to be able to search fabric according to pattern, size, type, etc., which is really helpful.

Would agree with Hickryd being over priced. Example 11 euro for metre of polka dot fabric, cotton. but murphy Sheehys is just as expensive, if not more so. Best bet is ebay. I get lots of fabric from charity shops, and ikea is great too.

I'll be following this thread as I have been looking for places to get fabric and other odds n ends like zips, magnetic clasps, buckles, d-rings and trimmings. So far it's ebay, but it's much nicer to browse instore locally.

I've seen some stuff like that come in to Lidl from time to time. Obviously not of the highest quality or anything, but some useful bits and pieces, it could be worth keeping an eye out for, it seems to come back every few months.

I've taken to browsing in town and then going home to find the same thing online once I know what I'm after!

Hi there, new to boards.ie but this seemed like a good thread to start as i'm a big hobby sewer myself.maybe you can try myfabrics.co.uk - they have a good selection of types of fabrics and haberdashery and delivery to ireland is 15 quid if I remember correctly.you can order free samples if you wanna be certain before you order.also,i've ordered from fabricland.co.uk,don't remember the shipping now,but it probably depends on amount, they are very helpful.third thing,i'm not sure what you're into making but if it's children's clothes/toys (like me :o) then try some german shops for good quality Hilco fabric for example, mineti.de Hope this helps, will keep an eye on this thread as I'm always looking for more suggestions of shops etc myself, the physical shops in Dublin at least are quite limited.

    hi there hatetherain &co,
well I've sewn in the Hilco jersey (campan) and velour (nicky) and they are both very good quality. it's expensive, but worth it if you're making something special. i'm not sure what you are making or how experienced you are,but i can say that the jersey doesn't roll when you cut it and the velour is not too heavy or too light and they both wash very well in a 40 degree delicate wash. i'm a kind of ok self taught hobby sewer myself. i've made pieces for my older child that i'm now using for the little one and it doesn't show. i mostly make some in "protest" against the pink-or-blue that you're bombarded with in the shops.
they use this brand almost exclusively in the sewing magazine Ottobre for example.http://www.ottobredesign.com/se/index.html
as pointed out already, there are some brilliant sites in USA, you could check for example http://www.reprodepot.com/ or http://www.superbuzzy.com/
for some fun prints and patterns. if you let me know what you are after maybe i can come up with some more.

I went to Vibes and Scribes in Cork city, just down from the Opera House, and they now stock loads of fabric! They have lots of lovely stuff, and didnt see anything over €14 per meter! Majority of it was from €4.99 to €9.99 per meter. I couldnt believe it!
Was really thrilled as Hickeys is so expensive!
They also stock fabric that would be great for costumes and loads of craft books to. And now I think about it, they have hard to find things like buckles for straps and the like.
    Cant wait to go again!!!
    Hope this helps someone!
