DSG Gearchange..??

    OK
    As the heading says.
I know it is called DSG in the VAG group.
What is it/similar system called in other makes?

Reason I ask is i planned on buying an Octavia Vrs Diesel this year.
    But
My back problem is getting progressively worse to the extent that it is often unbearable to press the clutch. Hence the DSG option
Unbfortunately the Vrs with DSG is out of my price range. what other options are open to me?
I have considered looking at a Leon FR petrol. with DSG
what are the views on these?
I notice quite a few 2008 models on Carzone with very low mileage.
Is this telling me "STAY AWAY"? Are they a bad reseller?

    Back to original Q.
What other models could I look at?
    cheers

    B.T.W.
I do qualify for the VRT/VAT deduction.

A DSG box is just a fancy auto box.

A DSG box is just a fancy auto box.

I assumed Auto was Auto but DSG was something of a different horse altogether.
    ie.
    Quicker gearchanges than auto.?

As Drummerboy08 says, you could look at any automatic car. The DSG box is particularly good, but reliability is a bit suspect.

@vectra - the internal workings of the DSG box are indeed different, but the overall effect is the same - gears changed for you.

DSG is VAG's auto box, for VW and Seat. Audi's normally have multitronic gearboxes.

I think its generally accepted that the DSG box is one of the best around in terms of speed and smoothness.

If your looking for an alternative, the auto box in the new Insignia/Astra is very smooth, but probably not as quick as a DSG box.

"fancy auto box" lol, Very insightful drummerboy08

Its actually quite a significant step forward in automatic transmission technology.

OP, DSG is basically the VAG groups acronym for their Dual clutch transmission. Vag were first to bring this technology to the market and have the best model choice for dual clutch equipped cars. You could also look into Audis with S-Tronic

Porsche have PDK, Mitsubishi have SST, BMW, Mercedes all have it too but it seems to be reserved for their higher end sports cars.

    Thanks for the replies

    As for the insignia ...!!
Hate the sight of them :o

well vectra I think the DSG will bring it up to a band B in tax if your opting for a 1.6 deisel, now if its a manual in the 1.6 deisel it will only be band A.
Now saying that its only if your going for a 1.6 deisel.

    Check out the Mondeo too.

Ford are offering the auto option as a free upgrade on the Mondeo at the minute I think. Its a new gearbox, so I'm not sure what its reliability will be like long term, but a free auto option?

    its worth a look.

What else is it? Its a gearbox that changes gear for you, hence the automatic bit. In real terms, its not much different that the run of the mill auto box. A bit quicker, and a bit smoother, but not noticable to 90% of drivers.
Its actually quite a significant step forward in automatic transmission technology.

    Only when it actually works.

    Its not an auto gearbox.

It's a manual gearbox with an automatic clutch which can operative if you want in a fully automatic mode.

Traditional Auto boxes dont compare to DSG for a sporty drive. The sharpness required for on the limit driving is there in bucket loads in the DSG whereas with most autos, you are never quite sure where you are. Having siad that, the OP shouldnt rule out all normal autos as for daily driving they are perfect.

    Well,
I was looking at the 2.0 Vrs Tdi octavia but with the DSG is out of my pocket range :(
Spotted a Nice Leon 2.0 Petrol FR 211 BHP :pac:
Tax range D but that doesnt bother me.
it would be resale prospects when 2 years old is my main concern

I wouldnt class myself as a "Normal Daily Driver" though :D

the sounds of "quick shift" really interests me

Are you talking about new or used cars?

    .

I would reckon 100% of drivers would notice the difference if they drove the DSG and then a 'normal' auto.

As someone who has been driving a GTI for the last three years with a DSG box, it most definatly isn't just a 'fancy auto' transmission.

    Vectra,

Don't buy a Leon FR if you have any form of back problem. Trust me on this one. You wont be doing yourself any favours

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,039 ✭✭✭mcshape

As far as I know you can get the superb tdi 140 dsg in ambition spec with dsg cheaper than the vrs and the seats in that are pure win! And heated!

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 13,822 ✭✭✭✭EPM

Powershift in the Ford's and Volvo's is apparantly as good.

Only 110 brake 2 litre diesel here in Focus but can be had with the 136 brake in the S40.

Somebody also advised me against the Vrs for that very reason :(

My mate has the 140hp S40 and its far from quick its carrying far too much bulk. How about a new Seat ibiza cupra R? That has DSG and its 170hp.

Nice car lad but I really would like to go bigger this time round ;)

I have the leon fr petrol and take EPM's advice if you have a bad back stay away from it you will feel every bump on the road. It is a quick car tho especially when you put it into S.

well that puts paid to that plan :o

I had thought about jumping at this one
    >> Leon FR Carzone <<

I reckoned it would have been bought fair cheap with some VRT/VAT back :(

    Ah well

Anyone suggest something pokey in Band C or D at around 29K retail ?

Mondeo 2.0TDCi Zetec. The emmisions have been dropped considerably - think the auto falls into band C. With the free auto upgrade, it should fall into your budget. Its comfortable, fairly quick and the new autobox is supposed to be fairly smooth.

    Yeah,
I had looked at those on Carzone but the zetec 140 was touching 32K I think
will check with my local dealer ;)
Had a Mondeo zetec before and liked it so presumably would like this model

I'm getting the VW Golf Comfortline 1.2l DSG in June. Can't f***in' wait. :D

There is a bit of discount off them at the minute I think. It should fit into your budget.

Would've thought that'd be fairly slow...especially so with an auto. Am I wrong?

A friend of mine has one, and he says it's quick. (I'm buying the DSG cos I'm disabled btw.)

See my other (mega)thread on the subject. :D

Good luck with it anyway. Keep her between the ditches! I still reckon it'd be slow though. :D

Father got one of the new Mondeo's last week. Couldn't believe how well it handled for a car that size. I'm now considering one if I can sell the Leon. Superbly comfortable too - heated leather jobs. Really nice. Sony stereo is great too

He got a savage deal on an 08 titanium x...2 litre petrol though.

Gorgeous car I have to say. They were doing good deals on the 2 litre petrols. Might have a few left. Worth checking out. He's getting 32 average combined which is quite good imo...

Titaniums are nice alright 32 average.. Does he do mainly town or distance driving?

90% town. Might be a longer spin mixed in since he got it for the novely. I took it for a nice run to Mallow from the city and driving hard enough on old road got high 30's...reckon it'll average about 31 way.

He said it's only about a fiver a week more than a 1.6 Focus on his usualy run (which is only about 200kms anyway)
