Flooding in Passenger Footwell

    I got into the car this morning only to discover a large pool of water in the front passenger footwell. The car was parked on an angle so it was contained in the top left hand corner of the footwell.

    Its an 03 3dr golf with a sunroof. Any advise as to what this might be? Am I looking at any electrical problems here? Any advice as to how to prevent a damp smell?

    Any help would be greatly appreciated. I'll be bringing it back to the garage I bought it from on Monday and it will be handy to have some detailed knowledge.

    Was the car parked at a severe angle? I'd start by checking the sunroof drain channels, if they're a bit blocked then the water may have flowed over the drain channel around the sunroof rather than down the tube.

    Could be the internal heater rad too.

    Im just going to assume that the sunroof and the windows were closed as you wouldnt be posting looking for an answer otherwise.

    Thanks for the reply. Yeah it seems to have come from a very small stream in the very corner of the cabin. I wouldn't necessarily call the angle severe.

    I did double check and yes the windows/sunroof were closed to their full extents.

    Here's a photo of the pool. Should I throw a dehumidifier in there? Ive already done a job with towels etc.

    I would if you have one, that VAG underlay can really stink when it gets wet.

    I going to assume because its only in the one corner that it's not the heater matrix or the internal heater rad. A more in depth google search yielded me this;

    I squeezed on the drain on the passenger side and a load of gunk followed by a stream of water drained out. I'm still going to get it checked out on Monday. I'm just a bit puzzled as to how that being blocked would cause water to build up there??

    Same happened to a golf I had. The drain gets blocked easily due to design. I cut away the ends of the nozzle to allow the gunk to come out.

    And was the flooding in the same place?

    It's the sunroof drain blocked, as you've said.

    It happens a lot and is something you should check quite regularly

    There are 4 drains, one at each corner of the sunroof. the front two run to the front of the front door frame and the rear exit under the rear bumper (I think). When one or more blocks it can leak down anywhere behind the head lining. Its like a bath overflowing really. It is accentuated if the car is parked on a slope.

    Its easy to diagnose and fix, it'd be the first place i'd look andsee how you get on.
