Something tells me the cost isn't an issue.

Learn synthesis and create you're own pads is my advice. Much more rewarding and in the long run, what needs to be done if you want to create something worthwhile. Anybody can use a preset.

Look at Kore... They make all kinds of extremely ambient patches you can use while you're learning to make your own.

The real truth is that cinematic folks now have thousands of sample packs/synths to choose from.

Just do a bit of investigating to find what's best for you.

    http://www.native-instruments.com/en/products/producer/kore-soundpacks/true-strike-tension/

    Here's a link ^^^

That's just one soundpack, they have a LOT of variety and all of the sounds are pretty darn tweakable.

Not a bad place to start, esp at the price.

Hey, well that's certainly a lot more info...

Sounds like what you need is more like symphonic stuff...

    Is that accurate?

There isnt one that does the lot....

I choose atmosphere over omni everytime for ambient, and even then its not always the best....so I revert to the Motif :)

Then most of the stuff is orchestral anyway when your dealing with zimmer etc.. so you will need that too....

There isnt a great all rounder im afraid, if your up for spending money spend it on good orchestral stuff and dont go running off getting the spectrasonics stuff (unless its rmx, best weapon ever) as any half decent soft synth used right will provide your synth sounds and pads.

yes nothing does good orchestral stuff AND pads, etc.

Unless you look at using sample based pads in Kontakt and orchestral sample in Kontakt as well...

You won't get decent orchestral stuff cheap and the good ones are very cpu intensive so you need to have a pretty decent pc/mac to run them on.

Look up eastwest Hollywood strings. They are doing a deal at the moment.

    To be clear:

you can easily find software synths with pads.... Hundreds.

But something like Band Of Brothers is pretty much all orchestral... At least as I remember it...

Depending on what your doing and what you can afford Kirk Hunter also makes pretty darn good orchestral sample packs. A good place to start out IMO.

if thats the case buy a decent synthesizer, like the dave smith poly evolver, theres no sound you can't get from it! Im sorry but most software lacks warmth and the sound IS thin!

It has no orchestral sounds or pianos though...

Try Native Instruments Absynth for all your ambient/kind of out there needs. The presets are interesting but its a damn powerful pice of machinery when you begin to learn how to actually use it. Won't do your strings and other orchestral stuff but it would be suitable for some soundtrack piece and all kinds of ambient music. Not that expensive either, they do a demo on the NI site too I believe.
