Just applied for my j1 today last minute type thing....not sure if any of my friends r up for it but i really wanna get outta this country for a bit!
If anyone else is in the same boat lemme know cause it'd be cool to have a travel buddy, or if there's a group of ye that need/wouldnt mind an extra person!.
I'm 22 and its my first time going, I'd rather not do san diego or any of that typical stuff to be honest but if it comes down to it that's cool also.

Take advantage of your independence! You can go with a group and pander to the common denominator and end up all going somewhere no one really wants to visit. Have you always had a dream to visit Nebraska? Now you can! No?

Just do it yourself, avoid going with any Irish people and have a true cultural experience. Immerse yourself with the yanks and you'll be the better for it. I went twice by myself and made some lifelong friendships. If you are going by yourself it is wise to try and pre-arrange employment if you can. It's good knowing you have somewhere to stay and have some guaranteed income to cover costs over the first few weeks. There are thousands of seasonal jobs open every May/June around most of the national parks; gift shops, hotels, tour companies etc. This might be a good place to start although if you have city life in mind this won't be for you. Good luck anyway .

hey thanks for the reply, seriously considering boston. Any thoughts?

Can't help you there I'm afraid. I don't even know anyone who has been to Boston on a j1. Sounds like a great place though. I suppose you could just start googling companies and bars and start sending CVs, you might turn something up.

one thing i've been wondering about is getting a social sec. number. I heard it takes at least 5 weeks, how much more difficult would it be to find a job without one?

Hi, I'm really thinking about heading away this summer also, few of my friends want to go interrailing for two weeks during the summer but would love to go to america for a few months! I don't think any of my friends can afford it either, don't know if i could go by myself!
Marie4 when would you be thinking of going out? boston or travelling around? I'm from Donegal..

I'm a 19 year old student. Thinking of heading out to america on a J1 at the last minute. Don't have any plans yet or real thoughts on where i'd like to go. Was initially thinking Boston but I'd go anywhere where I thought I'd have a good time. If anyone is in the same boat it'd be great to hear from you / if anyone is interested in meeting up out there or trying to look for accomm etc...

I'm going to Chicago in a week and a half. I'll be on my own for the first while so if you end up going there PM me. I've two friends going over a few weeks after me but the more people, the better.

Ahoy there, 20 year old guy heading to Boston, going to live with a crowd of people I only met once in Somerville but should be good to meet new people. If anyone's heading there and wants to meet up for drinks or general merriment send us an old pm
