    Hello,

I understand that the medical card only covers silver fillings. Is it possible to pay the difference yourself to get white ones? Thanks!

    Hi there

you are right to say it only covers metal fillings on the back teeth. The dentist can do a white filling if you want but technically the dentist is not allowed to charge you under the medical card scheme.

I am sure if you discuss before treatment you can come to an arrangement to suit you both

The short answer is No, top ups are not allowed on the medical card. You can however choose to go fully private.

As long as the arrangement does not break the law, or compromise the dentist.

It is a breach of the contract with the HSE for dentists to partially charge for a treatment that is available under the medical card scheme. The patient can choose to pay full private fees however. AFAIK.
