Thinking of Travelling to the Antarctic

I've searched a few treads here for info on the Antarctic but the most recent thread is 2008. Has anyone been there lately or planning to go there?

I also see the costs seem to have spiralled from 3k to 5k in the last 2 years.

    Any suggestions?

    Thanks

As far as I know, the Antarctic is no confined to visitors who have a professional interest in the environment (tourists not wanted). You can go through one of the ports in Argentina. However, I believe you must make enquiries through organisations like Friends of the Earth etc

No, you can go alright, apparently 35,000 passangers went last year.

    Found this:

I'd still prefer to hear from someone who's gone there or planning to go instead if the info on the link.

Yeah you can go for sure, the season is on right now.

Ushuaia is the port in very southern Patagonia that you want to be at. 3-5k is about right.

However if you have the funds to hang around Ushuaia for a couple of weeks bargains may be had (sometimes).
Cancellations can and do happen and in those events the ships captain tries to sell the berth to a backpacker, normally about 1k+ at last minute.

I was down there myself last winter (Ushuaia, not Antartica) and apparently it can be done on the cheap, takes patience though and you wont be the only one looking for cancellations so a few well greased captains hands are sometimes in order ;)

Id advise getting in touch with Emilio Chocron who owns and runs Freestyle hostel- he's good english and should know the score.

I saw one for $1500 in a shop window in Ushuaia this time last year. It was a last minute deal. People said I was crazy for not taking it!

Fair play go for it , didn't do it myself but when in ushuaia heard these kind of prices quoted. maybe you should try to combine it with a trip to argentina/ patgaonia and then get a berth from ushuaia.
But you gotta get there in the right timeframe- i as far as i remember nov- march is the window.
