I'd quite like to play either Napoleon:Total War or Empire: Total War, but I don't know if my laptop could handle it, I've heard they both have fairly high requirements.

My laptop is fairly new, a Dell Studio 15 and has the following specs:
    base
    Intel® Core™ 2 Duo Processor P8700 (2.53Ghz, 3MB, 1066MHz)
    Memory
    6144MB 800MHz Dual Channel DDR2 SDRAM [1x4096 + 1x2048] (with 64bit OS only)
    Keyboard
    Internal UK/Irish Qwerty Backlit Keyboard
    Video Card
512MB ATI Mobility RADEON HD 4570
    Hard Drive
    500GB (5.400rpm) SATA Hard Drive
    Microsoft Operating System
    Genuine Windows® 7 Home Premium 64bit- English

Does it look like it could handle the games?

Empire: Total War will run on that no problem. It's 2 and a half years old. I'd say Napoleon should be grand as well. Suggested specs are as follows:

Core 2 Duo 2.4 GHz, 2 GB RAM, graphic card 512 MB (GeForce 8800 or better), 15 GB HDD, Windows XP SP2/Vista.

You pass all of those. Not sure what that graphics card is you have but I'm pretty sure it's better than an 8800 cos that's pretty old at this point. TBH, most of the graphics requirements for modern PC games have remained pretty static since 2007 when Crysis and SupCom2 came out and there was a big backlash against high system requirements.
