Only catch is that you have to pick up the bottles yourself

I've heard before that best before dates on beer aren't quite as crucial as food. There was a time recently when beer didn't have gone off dates- it was brought in by the EU cos beer is now considered food by EUcrats as it has yeast in it.

But from what I hear drinking beer past its sell by date won't kill you and it still tastes okay, I've never had any myself but perhaps someone here has?

"Best Before" dates aren't important. "Use By" dates are.

Depends on beer to beer, as alchohol precentages and what is used in the making of the beers vary wildly.

Good properly made beer will generally taste good for many years, some beer which continue fermentation in the bottle will change characteristics much like wine, potentially get better with age - to a point.

Anyway most beer will be fine at least a while after the date at least, I wouldn't stick Grolsch in your cellar expecting to whip it out as vintage in a couple of years though :pac:

I have experience with Guinness , about 4 months gone out if date, it was hit and miss, most of them were mingun but the odd one was okay... I heard that it's more to do with the widgets though, that they fail to go off or the gass in them is useless if they are too far past their bb dates.. Don't know if that's true thou...

Anyway I think the grolsch will be ok for about 10-12 weeks past it's bb date, if u wanna stock up for longer than that, tesco have 24x33cl bottles Stella(5%) for only €15 and nowhere near their bb dates.

In fairness, find another 24 30cl bottles for 12 euro and come back and complain then!

Loads of cases in Rathgar. Only just saw this thread now and yes they are best before 30th April. Wanted them for brother's birthday party in June, I'll just have to tuck into them now. An age since I have had one. Not great I have to say. Would have been better buying 12 beers for €12 of something that I liked.

I think shop should have to state the short BBD.

By any chance are these the swing-top bottles? They're handy for home-brew!

True, but bear in mind most beers, guinness included, are brewed to a high % and then diluted back down. This grolsch is 5% and many other longnecks are 4.3%, so if you diluted the 300ml grolsch to 4.3% it would be more than 330ml. You can look at it as 600ml for €1, which is 20% more than a can, and over 15% stronger than most cans which are around that price, not to mention most people prefer bottles.

    Plenty left in ballybrack.
