Making myself stand out?

I have sent out my cv a few months ago looking to get experience in the hope of starting work full time before i start college. That didn't work.

Now doing my cv and cover letter again, and hoping on just getting a placement for college (need 1 day a week work experience starting september). Hoping to study veterinary nursing and have volunteered at a shelter but what else can i do to make my cv stand out?

What stands out on cvs? Obviously a well written cv and cover letter but what else?

A cover letter which is tailored for each job is the best thing you can do.

Contact with the employer a few days after sending your CV to check they got your application. (Be careful not to appear pushy though).

Remember you are selling yourself, and really there are no excuses for getting your CV or cover letter wrong, so make sure they are perfect.

    Google "Europass Cv".

    OP

while I'm sure the poster meant well re Europass CV, and while there is nothing inherently wrong with it, it does the exact opposite of standing out, it's reasonably common.

Agree with aarrgh contact them all afterwards, more than a few days in my opinion though. Never become a pest but your communications around this may make you stand out. Simple manners, asking for honest feedback can be endearing.....and more important memorable

Thanks FH. I meant it as a template, it is the content and presentation that stands out. If the presentation is simplistic for the reader, and the content good then it offers a window into the appliciant. FAS can also help you with CV's and cover letters.

    ring them and follow up..

We have interviewed several people who otherwise may not have been, as they seemed very keen so we gave them a chance.

Of course, it may not work, but its worth a go.

Totally agree, approach it like a sale, most employers need to be shown they have a job opportunity

I never thought about ringing them before cause if they were hiring, wouldn't they get in touch with you? But its worth a go, i will definatly ring them. But what do i say, did you get my cv, what do you think? It sounds rather blunt, doesn't it?
