Hens Teeth & the Grand Megane

    Hi Folks,

thought I'd give the search for the (Grand) Megane Tourer a rest for a week or so in the hope that someone would cancel a deal. Is there any dealer out there with these in stock? Or are they still like hens teeth?
I'm (well, my car) is eligible for scrappage. 'Olde Fateful' [Escort] is a bit like the Star Ship Enterprise now in a battle with the Clyons...I can hear Scotty in the background saying "she'll not hold together much longer Captain" I'm keeping it together with hair bobbins, tie-clips and glue. And God only know what state the Dylithium Crystal is in! since it's 100k over-due a timing belt :(.

I'll be popping into the local Renault dealer again today on my way home but I know it will be in vain.

Saab Ed might be able to help, I think he may have posted last week sometime that he could source one but that is probably gone now, worth a try though.

I've still only seen one on the road so far.

    Sorry
Not much help to ya, I really think this needs clarification!but the Star ship Enterprise is part of the Star Trek Series and the Cylons are part of the Battlestar Galactica Series and would never battle with each other.

But are you test driving or actually getting one? Dont get what the problem is?

The problem is that there's none to be got at the moment.

And you have obviously missed the cross over episode where the enterprise gets sucked into a blackhole into the Galactica universe.

Isn't Battle Star Galactica the one with Lorne Green in it?
Any Hoo, the wife has more or less set her heart on the Megane and would we would be driving a Royle Megane now if it wasn't for someone on boards informing me that the tourer is the same price.

Feckit! I must have blacked out in a time warp (or binge). I never really got into Galactica with all the '70's fashion; mutton shoulders etc.

Wonder did anyone Sky + it?

Yeah it is, there was a new one out that finished last year, very good, theres a new spin off of the new one on now called Caprica, also very good.

So why dont you just order it if your happy with it? Just wondering or am I missing something?

    Star Wreck?
That'd be the Babylon 5 universe, not BSG

    Sorry I ever mentioned a Klingons :D!
Anyway, we digress...I only test drove the Megane Royale for 2 minutes and found the steering strange. I'd like to get a spin out of the Tourer to see if it's any better[not that it would stop me from purchasing] Coming from a heavy Ford Diesel engine on which the steering is solid.

Well the klingons might have served you better HA!

Anyway, right get ya now, ya haven't driven the Grand Megane, ok well that would be frustrating. I guess your search will continue till one comes in?

I'd say alot of newer modern cars have way lighter steering compared to an Escort diesel. You want a good 20 minute test drive I reckon to get used to it!

Well best of luck and if you get it happy driving. I was considering the same model myself but have changed my mind. Nothing to do with the car or brand just personal circumstances have changed.

Called into the local dealer as intimated earlier and he tells me he'll have a Grand Mégane Royale in 2-3 weeks. I think the Dynamique looks great and I'm not sure how much extra it would cost; but I don't think I'll get the same great scrappage deal of €15 with alloy/met paint as I'm getting in the Royale version. Is it only the Royale is offering 6.5K does anyone know....Saab Ed?

    Hi Guys,

I ordered a Grand Meg in mid-feb, and am told that this should be Ireland mid-april for an 8week lead time (going to verify today and a shift in this date would not surprise me though).

I ordered the 106bhp on the strength of drives in the Grand Megane 86Bhp (and in a 110Bhp Laguna 1.5Dci because there was going to be no 106Bhp G M available for yonks). I was pleased with the handling of the 86Bhp Grand Megane, just wanted to get an impression of what the other 20BHP and the sixth gear would do for it, the Laguna 110 was the closest they could offer. Not a satisfactory experience on which to make a decision some might say but it was enough for me, there will definitely be some extra and welcome lift in the 106 I'm sure.

We have been a 2 car Toyota family for the past 15 years and I fully intended sticking with the marque this time around but have to admit my head was turned by the huge array of extras with the Grand Meg and the aggressive discounting by Renault.

(Unlike Eddie Cunningham of the Indo, spending a day or two familiarising myself with new cabin technology would not faze me in the least:- http://www.independent.ie/lifestyle/motoring/dial-f-for-frustration-2105708.html)

I hope I do not live to regret forgoing the ever-reliable Toyota on this occasion, but the 20K that I spent (and itemised below) would not even get me as far as the alloy wheels on a new Toyota Avensis diesel, let alone SatNav and about 20 other extras on the close-to-top model Grand Megane that I selected.

While there is no doubting that Renault has had its problems with particular models/years in the past, I uncovered many Renault users who have had no problems with the marque. There also seems to be a general groundswell of opinion that Renault has taken progressive steps to address reliability issues in latter years and I was encouraged by its absence from the long list of high-profile recall casualties over the past year.

Poor resale value is also cited regularly by its detractors, but my intention of long term retention, combined with the purchase of the extended 5 year warranty, and of course, the fact that the item is so heavily discounted in Ireland from the outset (thereby capable of "withstanding" a steeper decline in open market resale value than others if you know what I mean) contributed to my decision to buy with my heart perhaps more than my head this time around.

Hopefully my comments might be of some use to anybody in the decision making process at the moment.

    Rgds
    Orson.

This is called the Grand Megane small-family car because it is bigger, if not necessarily grander, than the ordinary one.

It is larger and longer and, frankly, looks like an estate.

I wonder why that is. :)

    Excellent first post, well presented!

I think Eddie Cunningham is trying to be Jeremy Clarkson, with his fake distain for electronics and Sat Nav's all he was missing was flappy paddle gear shifter and in fairness theres only one clarkson, legend, so his article to me was terrible and irrelevant! What a waste of ink! But other people would say that about Clarkson. So......

Let us know how you get on with the car and best of luck with it!

Very good post. I hope you get your car soon and that it proves to be a relaible and good car.

He gives the car a decent review, but like Orson all this technology wouldn't faze me , nor would I suspect most other people, in fact the more gadget and fiddly things the better for me.

Sorry, I should have qualified or quoted, I was referring to EC's comment that the Grand Megane "frankly, looks like an estate". Top marks for observation.

The Avensis diesel is a Laguna rival, the Megane is an Auris/Corolla rival, that's a big part of the reason why there is such a price gap(fair enough Toyota doesn't do an Auris/Corolla estate these days but I thought I'd mention it:)).

Thanks everyone, esp Orson100; you should be a motor magazine editor...brilliantly worded and well formalised piece.

Still waiting, and I see in the Indo this week in the small print of the Renault ad that the extra scrappage deal/offer concludes on the 31st March  .

It was Jan 31st back in Jan, so I wouldn't worry about it. :)
