Water pump and dynamo failed on 16/60

I took both the waterpump and dynamo off on the my Wolseley 16/60. I first thought that the fan belt was loose, but it became evident that the bearings on the waterpump had gone, possibly same with the dynamo given the noise off both. Both are now taken off. The dynamo has some sort of hole for lubrication. The waterpump has none. Incidentally a waterpump I got on Ebay first had its package wrecked by Royal Mail, the plastic bag and apology note was a bit weak really, and the pump itself has too small a hose and the impeller is too small, well it won't fit, off a Mini or an 1100, A40, something smaller anyhow, don't know.

Bog standard Lucas C41 dynamo? Aye you need to lube them periodically at the rear where the small hole is.

Waterpump, I presume is similar to other BMC B series engines cars. It's a long time since I had a 16/60...

if the bearings in both are gone, could it be the fan-belt was too tight?

Not too tight, maybe the previous owner had over tightened them. Almax will refurb the Dyno for c. 80 Euro. Now for a waterpump, hmmmm.

    Thinkingaboutit,

If you're in trouble with the dynamo send me a PM & I'll sort you out, can't help with the water pump though.

These Farina cars have three varieties of water pumps, according to the workshop manual, one for the 16AMW engine which can be lubricated through a lubricating hole, two for the 16GF engined cars, one that can be lubricated, one sealed. The one I was sent is significantly smaller than the one I removed. According the seller, if the box has 738 on it, which it does, it is correct. I might attach some photos of the pump I was sent (738 looks closer to the 16AMW pump, and the one that came out looks like the 16GF pump). The seller says 738 is for 1967-71, but it is smaller and surely less effective than the one I removed, assuming both are in working order.

Thanks, Fishtits, I'll do that now. I'm not quite in trouble, but I'd like to have three price. Message sent.

Thanks dutchcat, I'll look at ordering an MGB pump, given the engine is similar, I've wondered whether I could tap into the massive support MGB cars enjoy in respect of parts backup. I'm not really sure that converting it to an alternator would be a good idea for me. I have limited expertise, so that means paying a garage, or getting help from my Dad, which isn't easy as he's his own things to do.

Old on the left, new on the right.

Old in foreground, notice the bigger impellor with its curved blades. Even if the new one fits, I reckon there'd be a major risk of overheating.

They look similar in size from this angle.

Last one makes clearer the difference in size.

    Anyone?

I need another of the waterpump on the left. What was sent to me was too small. The dynamo is no problem, can't get three prices, but two will do. I think the MGB waterpump is what I'll have to get. The MGB got a fair bit more power from a similar engine, so it likely would do the job.

MGBs have three different ones listed:
    04/62-08/77 1798 OHV 59kw 80ps 18G QCP738
    68kw 92ps 18G
    70kw 95ps 18G
    10/67-08/77 1798 OHV 62kw 84ps 18GA QCP556
    68kw 92ps 18GA
    09/76-04/80 1798 OHV 62kw 84ps 18GB QCP974
    70kw 95ps 18GB

    The Morris Oxford has two:
    05/62-12/66 1622 OHV 63kw 86ps H16H QCP178
    01/67-04/70 1622 OHV 63kw 86ps H16H QCP738

(They are Quinton Hazell part numbers)

Thanks, mine has a 16AA engine, like the 16 AMW engined cars it uses a larger waterpump, bigger impellor and hose, QH 738 is wrong. Earlpart have the one I need, so I'll go with them. The bears aren't necessary gone on the dynamo. The brushes and shaft make noise turning, like it wasn't lubricated in years.

try and see if there is up and down movement in the bearings,a dynamo makes a slight squeaking sound from the brushes but you can pull them back and push the spring back to see if there is roughness in the bearings

I've Almax testing the dynamo to give a price, might look at that afterwards. I have ordered a waterpump for the 16AA engine from Earlpart, knowledgeable people, and the seller of the QH 738 to whom I'm returning my order, were helpful too. Content.

Wut at that smilie. The car will be running again on Tuesday or whenever the waterpump comes, but it's not something to smile about. k

Have the waterpump now, impellor is shaped a little differently.
