Iv been to the torremolinos end of the costa del, (flew into malaga) which i would advise you do NOT go there.
Rough, horrible and dangerous. I did see a holiday show about the Mijas area.
It looked beautiful and quite, but its very quite. The show said it doesnt have as many English speakers as the other end of the costa, but if you want good food and wine, and a nice quite relaxing time its perfect.

I do know the train station rite outside Malaga airport will bring you rite to the Mijas area.

Have a look at Nerja.... its about 45 mins the opposite side of Malaga to marbella etc. Nice old style town, but has a bit of nightlife and plenty of nice restaurants etc.
