That's the correct charge and it's clearly stated on their website. Have a look at booking a new flight instead of a name change and it might work out cheaper.

Booking new flights may be cheaper indeed. Don't forget, by law, they are obliged to return the taxes paid on a flight if you decide not to go. Ryanair hate admitting this but if you do apply for the refund, they process it. They have no choice. And since most of what you pay to Ryanair are taxes, you can often get quite a bit back. Of course, they charge a hefty fee for processing the refund but often, you still get money back. So do consider that option: Ask for your taxes back on the currently booked flight and then get another one for your friend.

thanks again for the helpfull commemts , unfortunately i booked with them only for one reason ! swore i wouldnt fly wit them again but the flights at the time were free of taxes ! i should have known to just go elsewhere god knows what extra charges will incur on the day , last time with them for sure this time , worth the extra to go elsewhere and pay a bit more
    Thanks Guys

"Free of taxes" is a marketing ploy. You paid the taxes, Ryanair just manipulate the sale price to make it look like you didn't but you paid them believe me. Ryanair have a legal duty to charge them. They have no option but to do so. To do otherwise would be tax evasion which is a criminal act. Chase up your refund.

If it's a no taxes flight then you won't be getting anything back. The taxes are still paid, either by Ryanair increasing the base ticket price or they just take the hit. But unless it is listed as a seperate item on your charges when booking with them you won't be getting anything back.

I doubt very much that this is the case.

Where else do you think they are getting the money to pay these taxes from for the 1eur and similar flights that they sometimes have with the claimed no taxes? They are counting on you buying stuff on the plane, but just want the bums on seats mostly.

You certainly won't be getting taxes back from those flights, but if you do fly then they still have to pay the airport fees etc.

Its not just ryanair, Aer Lingus charge €50 per name change per flight so a return flight will cost you €100

In fairness, I think it is easy to see where the high name change fee comes from: If changing names was free (or cheap), sales could not possibly work. Someone would just buy up all the cheap fares withing a couple of minutes and then resell the tickets on eBay. High name change costs mean that whoever buys a ticket is genuinely interested in using it himself/herself. It makes sense to me.

    So....
All other airlines' tickets are freely transferable are they?
Doesn't matter who they're booked for, anyone can use them?
