I'm looking for the best route. AA road planner and google maps both give me different ways.

I presume there might of been some new road openings that I don't know about so I'm looking for the best route.

AA trip adviser says to take the M4 then go up past Mulingar and longford.
Google maps says to go past Athlone

N/M4 and N5 (via Mullingar) would be my choice

Honestly both ways are just as similar.

You can head up past Mullingar but the Motorway ends earlier.

You can head through Athlone, through Athentry, into Tuam, over to Ballinrobe and onwards to Westport. - My Choice. ;)
