Some parts of the route have been changed form 2009 for various reasons. The most notable additions are new sections in Counties Down, Clare and Wexford. The Race will still include some of the hardest roads in the country with nearly 25 major climbs, including Gap of Mamore, Gap of Dunloe, St. Patricks Hill, Mt. Leinster and Drumgoff.

The Race Around Ireland will feature on Ireland AM on TV3 tomorrow (Fri 19th Mar) at 7.50am. They will be talking to the 8 person Team Youghal who took part last year and Ian Campbell who is taking part as a solo rider this year.

Why the route changes Emmet? Anything major? I see a stint over to Wexford that wasn't there last year

    Howaya Shaun

There are a couple of changes alright. Some major some not so big. We took out the early section at monasterboice and the second part of the climb in the cooleys. Mainly to give people a good run at things on reasonably decent roads for the 1st night.

We had to change it after newry too because of the work on the A1 so we're using a new route through scarva and glenavy before rejoining at ballyclare.

The last bit before the giants causeway caused a bit of trouble last year so we've simplified that, again mainly because its the 1st night.

We've changed the section after clifden.

Added a new large bit after lahinch through kilkee to ennis.

We've taken out cobh and added in another large section in wicklow.

The last change is the final run to the finish. We decided that it was best to drop straight down from sally gap instead of the last few bits of torture around enniskerry!

Whereas the route last year was viewed as being probably ideal for teams it was just slightly excessive for the solo riders. We also needed to add a few miles as the route last year was a bit short of the desired 1350. Dont get me wrong it's still savage hard but the difficulties should be more spread out and afford crews in particular more opportunities to rest.

Also we should be holding another info day in belfast sometime in april. Details to follow.

Can I put this forward for the 'Understatement of the Year' award?

They are defending their title this year - Were they the only 8 member team in it last year ? From the RAI results page there is no mention of any other times.

Yes they were but having the will and the ability to get a team to the start line in the first place is a victory in itself.
