If you tried it with a cold engine then you could try again when the engine's hot. Also, a cloth might give you a bit more grip.

    +1 on the cloth.
Or failing that you could try get a pliers onto it and CAREFULLY try open it without it breaking. :D

An oil filter removal tool might give you the grip you need.

I was thinking about something like that, but I think it'd be too big for a pliers and too small for an oil filter wrench. If it's got those curved indents in the side then the OP could try putting one end of a small piece of wood against the side of the indent and carefully tapping the other with a hammer.

Cheers for the reply ill try it when the engine is cooling down with a cloth. Its only got the grip on the top and not the side which one have made it a lot easier.

If it has the grip that sticks up on top then you'll definately get it with the pliers. Just make sure you dont slip and lose a knuckle :D

Put a length of timber up against one of the notches and tap it with a hammer.

It isnt a fiesta by any chance?

Remember trying for ages before to remove the cap while working at a petrol station. Turns out its more of a 'bung' than a screw cap

or a "cold" chisel or a large blunt screwdriver, a couple of gentle taps will shift the most stubborn cap

Vicegrips not tightened too much and maybe a small cloth in between. Try again when its cold...

Got it open in 1 second with a vicegrip. Good thing, cause it needed a good top up. Below the second line on the dip stick.
