X-Type Problem

    Hi guys,
I'm having a problem with my X-type 2.0 Diesel. When driving along at ~ 60mph the car seems to be excessively smokey. The engine rpm is just above 2000 at that speed. It also chucks quite a bit when driving at a constant speed and does seem down on power when I put the foot down. Any Ideas what could be causing this?

I've been to a garage who said the ECU had to be re-mapped which they said they did but I see no difference from before they did anything to it...

What mileage is on it? It could be the Diesel Particle Filter and may need changing. The X Type diesel is the same unit found in the Ford Mondeo so a Ford garage may be able to diagnose the problem for you.

The fuel filter has just been changed as I got a full service done on it on Tuesday. I've done some googling and the main suspect is the EGR Valve at the moment....

Just curious, are you generally happy with the X-Type Diesel? I am considering buying one of these at the moment.

Depends on what you're planning on paying for it to be honest... Everything else works perfectly but if you're not getting a good deal beware of the pitfalls... I paid well under market value for mine so i'm happy enough to fix minor issues with it...

I'd say it's the EGR valve also. They are common enough failure on the Ford / PSA diesels.

I would start by changing the particle filter. These are often ignored on a service, it is different to the fuel or air filter.
I know on a BMW they are a little bit of a pain to replace (a bit of stripping of covers to be done, etc.) so mechanics often "forget" to do them to save hassle.:)

These DPF's can be VERY expensive for a 'replace and hope for the best' repair

Bring it to a decent garage (does not have to be a main dealer) for a full diagnostic.

Do not use a cheap ebay special one as they only read basic info and cannot to any major diagnostics for the DPF.

EGR's can stick, simple enough job to service and free up, costly repalcement, if it's sticking the car can feel like the clutch is slipping, juddery power delivery (hope that make sense).

Also check the air hoses, if there's a leak in the pressurised intake it can cause a lot of smoke and hesitation though the car will run.

Correct me if I'm wrong but the Mk 3 Mondeo, and thus the X, didn't have a DPF ?

If it's not the EGR valve, then it could actually be an injector on the way out. In some engines you can take out the EGR valve and clean it and free it up because it becomes a bit sticky, and that could solve it, so maybe start with that and see. After that if it's still happening then it could be an injector. Is it down on power and very hesitant when it's off boost, at around 1200 to 1800rpm range, followed by a cloud of smoke when you accellerate?

No there is very little smoke on acceleration... it's when the car is sitting at a constant speed that the smoke starts. Hopefully it'll be as simple as the egr valve which I will be looking at on tuesday...
