    Hi,

Just wondering if many new graduate jobs do drug tests before offering employment in Ireland and the UK.

    Thanks.

    No, most don't.

    Depends on the industry though.

    I agree.

They should also check all qualifications are real, and check two or more references.

Just make sure you don't ask this in the interview :)

If they do a medical that usually indicates a drug test is involved.

Most physicals will take a urine sample but aside from what many think is a drugs test, Its not. Its some kind of protein and sugars test.

+1 to above, i had to do a medical for my current job, which included a full medical, blood and urine samples were taken.
now i knew i had smoked and it would show up, so i told my new employer. At the time i had been offered the job (pending medical) but i refused to hand in my notice in my previous job until the medical was completed.
i rang them up, and told then that if they were testing for drugs, that i would fail as i had smoked...........................i still got the job.

(it was only after i told them, that they said they were not drug testing.....oops!!)

most US bluschip companies do a full med that includes drug testing, they check for diabetes through the urine test some include audiogram tests.
most medicals just check basic stuff(vison&hearing) my last medical took 6 hours:D

I have only had to do a medical when private medical insurance was a perk of the job.

incorrect, a lot of companies have medicals where urine and blood may be taken by consent. Unless your are told, these aren't used for blood tests.

I think I was supposed to go for a medical in my job (my manager at the time told me so) but they never bothered doing it.

Regarding the drugs aspect, a friend of mine is a serious stoner and had to go for a medical when he started an accounting job, but he passed with flying colours.

If you're job hunting lay off the drugs. If you're taking prescribed pain medication make sure you have a doctor's note stating such.

Also it's good to cut your hair short in the case of a hair sample.

In the U.S. a drug test is mandatory, and now they are doing credit checks in addition to background checks. it's bound to happen over here as well considering the amount of foreign companies we have in ireland doing business here.

A lot of places explicitly tell you anyway - in my experience and in many of my friends experiences also.

Why would an employer need to know your credit status, and wouldn't this count as discrimination if they didn't employ you cause you were poor?

Your credit status doesnt mean your poor! They just want to know if you have defaulted on any loans or have large outstanding debts. You could be earning 1000's a week and still be bad with your debts.

An employee who cant keep their own house in order is not attractive to an employer.

If you ever want to work Offshore Oil and Gas you will be doing medicals all the time, yearly and random,a yearly medical lasts about an hour for me,inlcuding ear, eye, fitness, blood, urine test and even long bone xray! i'm a diver
lay off drugs for good for this sort of job,you will be blood tested for everything also.

That would really depend on the sector to be fair and I havent seen it in any sector I've been in thus far (banking, pensions, IT)

No I don't. Wasnt aware that was where you were referring to.

To be honest I dont see how credit checks are relevent for employment in 99% of roles in any country.

Well I know it sounds silly but if someone has a terrible credit rating and they are financially stupid it may not be a good idea to be working in Banking/loans/pensions anything to do with finance really.
