    Hi,

My PS3 (40GB) has been acting up the past few days, at first it seemed to just shut itself down after a while, now it will only turn on for 2-3 seconds and then it turns off again.

Does anyone know what's wrong with it?

    Regards,
    Daz

Have a look at the lights on the front of the box when you start it up. If the light flashes yellow before turning off, you have the YLOD [Yellow Light of Death, a play on the 360's RROD problem].

If you are within your warranty, you can simply trade it in for a new one. If not, Sony charge for repairs [not sure of the price]. Console Repairs also do these repairs and I believe they are slightly cheaper.

Yeah the yellow light comes up. It's not within warranty, it's 2 years old. So do I just ring Sony or could I bring it to a Sony Center?

Ring Sony first. They will tell you what you need to do next.

BTW make sure that when you do get it back, you take a full backup of your PS3 HDD as sometimes the PS3 fails again after a month and won't come back. The backup will aloow you to restore to a new PS3.

Hiya, before you do anything, take a look at this thread....http://www.boards.ie/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=2055795516&page=17

There have been a few of us there who have had the YLOD and have had our consoles replaced for free from the retailers we bought them from, under the Sale of Goods Act.

i wouldn't recommend consolerepairs.ie because it's only a temporary fix. mine only lasted a month. couldn't be fixed a second time. i'm 6 months without a ps3 now, and there's no way sony are getting one more cent from me. 630euro i'll never buy another sony product again. at least microsoft fix their dodgy box for ya when it dies.

40GB seem to give the most problems, although I could be wrong about that, but from what I've heard a lot of people have problems with em.

I've had my 60 gig since it first came out, not a bother so far. (touch wood).
