    Just read an old thread regarding emergency lighting (looking up arguments about red lighting) and came across a thread that went off topic.

    This is a post from that thread;

    However alot are actually driving on Chief Superintendents permission they are not allowed engage in putsuits.

    <snip>

    The gardai are not trained in putsuits (eg boxing in cars or ramming cars), although it is not recommended individual gardai can make the decision to do this but be it on their own head. If anything goes wrong they are liable to prosecution. Management will not back you but it may be required to save a life.

    Surely that can't be right? Does that essentially mean that if you get pulled over by AGS, you can speed off and they *shouldn't* chase after you?

    And if they do decide to chase after you (you have to be running from something!) If anything goes wrong the blame rests on the Garda's head? :confused:

    "the Gardai are not trained in pursuits" - - - Not true! Balony - If the Gardai pull you over for 'whatever' and you attempt to flee the scene rest assured you will be pursued!!

    I think if you read it in context, he means the ones who are driving on Chief's Permission are not trained in pursuits. Of course there are advanced driving courses that some Gardai attend, and this is where you would learn all about pursuits and stuff.

    Ah yeah... I just re-read it twice or three times and I am reading it differently now. Makes more sense.

    Have a question though; Say I'm a Garda and I'm chasing a guy down a street and decide that the only way I'm gonna be able to stop him is to bump into him or get in front of him and brake to slow him down, etc. (pretty much any scenario where my Garda car will come into physical contact with his car).

    If I lose a wing mirror, break a bumper, smash a window, etc. on the Garda car I'm driving, is that going to affect me (finanically or otherwise?).

    Would I have to pay a percentage (or all?!) of the cost towards getting the car fixed up? Would the damage caused to the car result in me being banned from driving a patrol car for X amount of time, etc.? or is it all water under the bridge and whatever may have happened will be automatically deemed as having been necessary?

    Also, I seen a photo of a Garda car (could've been a few weeks ago) that lost control in the snow on a motorway somewhere. Not entirely sure what happened, but the whole front of the car was really badly damaged. Don't think they were in a rush anywhere. Would that be out of the Garda's pocket?

    If a Garda car is damaged by a Garda on duty, then the state picks up the bill. I'm not going to go into "What if..." scenarios and I don't imagine any member will either, because it will involve referring to how things are done, and we don't do that on this forum.
