    Hi all,

Have a BMW 320 diesel and there is a noise coming from the back right wheel. You only hear it when sitting in the back and usually when taking off.

Will bring it to a garage newt week but any ideas??

    Thanks

Prop it up with the jack on an axle stand and see if you can rock the wheel back and forth with your hands and the 12 o'clock and 6 o'clock positions.

If there is play in it then your wheel bearings could be shot and that would need to be looked at immediately unless you want to drive along and see your wheel rolling down the road in front of you.

What kind of noise is it? Does the noise get louder as you speed up? Does it get louder when you are turning one way & get quieter or disappear when you turn the other way?
If so it is very likely a wheel bearing as the previous poster has suggested. An OEM bearing supplied by the BMW dealer goes for about €60. I changed (or rather got it changed) a rear wheel wheel bearing 2 years ago, the mechanic used a spurious item. I had to replace it again recently, I went with a genuine item this time.

To be honest I can never hear it at all when I am driving so its hard to tell when the noise is there. You can only hear it when you are in the back seat.

Its a humming sound and the person in the back usually only hears it when you take off.

Will try out what DeepBlue said tonight to see if there is any play on the wheel.

Have my NCT in about 10 days so might hold off untill after that to get it fixed in case there are other issues.

Try the suggestion for play in the wheel. Also have a look at the tyres. I thought i had a bearing fail in the vectra but found out on the forums the noise was caused by tyre feathering. This was caused by the camber of the wheel and results in the tyre becoming slightly scalloped in shape. Simply swapped them fron to back and noise gone. Apparently common on cars with a more severe camber/toe-in

I had one of these and had a similar problem. I think there is something to do with the handbrake mechanism in that area. Might be worth checking out

It might be your break disks

Could be the rear suspension bushings.
