PS3 60GB failure and exchange problem..advice needed

    Hi all,

I bought a 60gb PS3 in 2007, the Blu-Ray laser failed me early last year and I had it fixed by an outside source due to it being out of warranty. Trouble is, there is a whole new problem with it now... the system crashes when trying to play DVDs, and fails to recognise certain Blu-Rays. I've been told the problem is unfixable now.

I have organised them to replace mine through the retailer I bought if from for the €160 fee. Apparently this cannot be done due to my PS3 not having the original warranty sticker, having been opened up for repair last year.

This is really a load of bull, I'm going to get screwed here. I recall looking through every possible avenue last year and to my knowledge, I don't believe Sony were offering the service they do now at that point, which left me having to seek outside help in order to try and preserve a 600 Euro investment.

I have not informed either Sony or the retailer of this 'glitch' in proceedings, but I was told by the retailer that they flat out refuse to take a PS3 in without that sticker. I mean, I would still be paying the 160, and the unit I hand in would not be used again by anyone else, other than for examination purposes I presume. Do I have any options? Apologies if this all sounds a bit dodgy, but I feel a bit hard done by.

You have voided any warranty you could possibly get from a retailer or Sony by having your PS3 repaired by an unauthorised third-party.
Your issue should be with the "outside source" who repaired your PS3. The "outside source" could have caused the issue you are seeing now due to bad repair, faulty laser (which it sounds like to me), ESD issues.

I'd just contact sony support, tell them you've got a dead ps3 and they'll likely advise you where you can acquire a refurbished model for €160.

Hadn't heard of any retail place pushing the warrantee sticker to be honest, most just seem to take in the knackered console and hand out the refurb. Some don't even take the dead ps3!

The guy I spoke to at the retailer (wont say where, but its a large international chain) seemed very definite and strict about this sticker issue. I should hear back from him about this before the end of the week, but if they won't take it in, I was speaking to Sony and they told me that what I was experiencing with the retailer was surprising and they would take in my console themselves for a swap if it didn't work out.

The reason I'm holding out is due to the process being a lot lengthier if I have to go through Sony Ireland, whereas the retailer will do a straight over-the-counter swap when the refurb order arrives. The order has been placed, I'm told, so I'll wait and see if I can get any joy from them before I go through Sony.

One thing I was told from Sony was that I would receive the same model (60GB) in exchange, whereas the retailer told me that's a load of manure due to the discontinuation of that line some time ago. It would be nice to be able to play PS2 games, but I'll take what I can get I suppose.

Yeah you should get the same model you had. I had the YLOD and the gave me a 60GB refurb just the other day, in Gamestop, so they are definitely still around.
